Claiming back a standing order

My Dad had to move out of his nursing home as it was costing down. My Mum didn’t cancel her standing order and has now made 3 extra payments. I have tried to explain to her that it was her responsibility to cancel the SO and that the company haven’t ‘taken’ her money. The company has now closed down. Do you think there is any way to get the money back? I have tried emailing the owner but had no response.

How much was it in total? There isnt really a way to get it back without the account holder returning it to you. If their account is closed or overdrawn then it's unlikely you'll get it back.

Why did they close down? If they have moved elsewhere, you might be in with a chance as a goodwill gesture to avoid /bad publicity in the local papers.

If they have gone bust, you will be a creditor but you may be way down the list of who gets paid.

I’m not convinced that they have gone bust. The home closed down as wasn’t profitable I think but the care group still seems to be operating as a business and the details are still there on companies house.

It’s about £450 in total. Not a huge amount but a lot to my retired parents.

So a possibility of a good will refund.

Having emailed and checked that the email is short, coherent and to the point, I would ring them. Maybe ring once to get the name of the person dealing with accounts. And then ring back a little later asking to speak to that person. Ask 'em

Follow up with an email and push to know when they will refund. Good luck.

If you can afford it, I would be tempted to pay them in the meanwhile and refund yourself if you can get the money returned.
