Changing electricity suppliers - I hate powergen

Hiya,
Has anyone else been having problems with powergen? When we first set up our account with them we set our direct debit far too low so they changed it accordingly to pay this off. Over six months later, we've paid off the debt and have even been going into credit with them but they want to put the direct debit up again!
It is already at £100 and my Dp is on a low wage so we can't afford another price hike. We're going to switch suppliers ASAP as we're both getting sick of the rises, especially as I thought prices were coming down!
What companies would other people suggest and have others had the same problem? It is making me very

I would say that apart from the random price increases they've been okay...but they've also overcharged us by a couple of hundred in the past because they insisted on using estimated readings which were way off. We tried to give them the correct readings but it took ages for them to sort it out. Very annoying! Now they check the meter every three months or so. And strangely enough the amount we owe drops after every visit, but the payments keep rising. I don't get it

Has the meter man visited recently? If not, read your own meter, phone them up, give it to them also ask what your last actual meter rdg was. To find out your daily consumption, subtract the old reading from your new reading. Divide that number by the number of days which have elapsed since the 2 rdgs were taken. ie 04 June 07 to 31 Aug 07 is 87 days.

Ask them to do an up to date review of your consumption in £££s and what it averages out for over the year. remember that your consumption is normally higher in the winter than in the summer.

Don't get me started on powergen. When we moved in our new house we took them with us. They 'forgot' to inform Transco they were taking over so Npoe

Pinkchampagne · 31/08/2007 13:30

Oh no, I'm worried now!

kiskidee · 31/08/2007 13:32

I wouldn't worry myself. i think the power companies are all similar in the type of mistakes they make. Just that when you start to rant, others with similar rants are happy to join in. [ and i mean that in a nice way everybody ]

sorry...

Npower thought they were providing us gas. We were paying Powergen for both. NPower were billing us "nil" - every bill we received from NPower we phoned & told them ou're not our supplier.
When we changed to ENG last year Npower sent us a bill for £600!!! Powergen had been putting our gas payments to our electric bill but they were set so low any surplus wasn't anywhere enough to pay NPower.
Much to-ing and fro-ing later we've told NPower we'll pay them back over the 3 years it took them to bill us

The meter man visited last week and my Dp checked the readings online to make sure. We were going to ask them to lower the direct debit as by our calculations we will be going into credit each month by nearly £200, doesn't seem worth it now.
