I just wanted to check my calculation because I've heard bad things about UC, but think we'd be better off on it.

3 children, all born before 2017, 2 with disability (1 HRC, 1 MRC).

Income 1483
Rent 489.98

Standard allowance £498.89
First child £277.08
Second child £231.67
Third child £231.67
Disability 1 £392.08
Disability 2 £126.11
Carer £160.20
Rent 489.98
Total £2281.57

If you get carer’s Allowance that would be deducted £ for £. And then the earnings will also be taken into account- not £ for £ though.
The calculator on entitled to will be quite accurate

Posting in sections because I lost it all!

Income-work allowance=1483-287=£1196
£1196×0.63=£753.48 'excess'
£2281.57-£753.48= £1528.09 per month

We currently get no housing benefit and £251 weekly for Tax Credits, which is £1087 monthly.

Ah yes, I'd forgotten that.

Is your rent council / housing association ? I presume it is.

Babyroobs · 11/01/2020 12:47

I make it £1368.12 UC approx. with carers allowance deducted and assuming full rent element given.

Lougle · 11/01/2020 21:39

Thanks Babyroobs, yes Council house with 3 bedrooms and 3 children.

Figures probably correct. Things to look for

  • are either of you self employed as it affects how earnings are treated
  • Hours that the person not getting Carers Allowance works to see if they would have any commitment to look for work - probably not given circumstances.
if the person working still does 35hpw looking after your second disabled child (and no one else is getting Carers allowance/premium) you may be able to get two Carer premiums.
