Insuring university student son on my car

Hi. My DS is 19 and at university. He doesn't have his own car, but I insure him to drive mine when he is home - just as I did with his older sister. For the next 6 months I cannot see him driving my car very much, but he will when he returns home for the summer. My insurance is due for renewal - the quote for just me is £200 per annum and for me and him it's £700 per annum. Is there anything stopping me taking out the £200 one, paying monthly and cancelling it after 6 months to take out a policy for me and him and then cancelling that one when he returns in October. Thoughts ?

You can get short term car insurance, so you could have a seperate policy just insuring him on your car when he is likely to use it. I would investigate now and see if this would be cheaper.

Thanks very much for taking to time to reply. I did investigate this and it does unfortunately work out more expensive than just including him for the year.

Marmalade? How much does he actually come home? Does he have to use it every time?

cheaper for him to get taxis or hire a car than pay that! Try again when he is 25 or so.

Pay for your current policy of just you, then add him as a named driver in 6 months time. Will it affect your no claims record if you only ever get 6 months of cover at a time?

Have you actually asked your insurer for a quote to add him on a fixed term basis? I got a quote in the summer from veygo, then called my insurer to ask what it would be to add dd for the summer hols. It was actually cheaper. They sent me a temporary certificate for the summer, then it resorted back to my normal one.

I use Veygo for my uni DD. You can insure from a day to months. It means if she has a claim it doesn’t affect my policy. They also use their no claim periods towards their next insurance period.

Take out the policy for just you. When he comes home, phone up and add him to the policy then. Then take him off again when he leaves.
