Tax return

Trying to fill my self-assessment in online. Always done it before without an issue. I only have to fill this in due to renting out my house whilst I lived overseas for a few years (now back home, living back in the property, but for the last few months of last tax year tenants were in the property so this is my 'last time' completing so to speak!)

In the past, I've logged on, clicked something (can't recall what exactly as there's so many options!) but it then took me to the section that simply means I'm filling out the 'landlord' tax bit, for the rental bit. Never had to pay any tax because I actually was renting at a loss, as my mortgage interest was higher than the rent I was getting.

Now...come to today...log on, as usual, through the same Gov. Gateway thing. The screens have all changed and I don't recognise anything! Still my details, but very different questions. Still, I fill it all in and get to the end and it produces a FULL tax return with my employment tax information as if I haven't paid any tax this year via PAYE (which I have!!) and tells me I am required to pay ALL my due tax (LOTS OF TAX 😳) by June and nearly 3k of it by end of Feb!

There's nothing to pay on the property part (of course! There never has been...I wasn't expecting there to be anything) but it's clearly a mistake right?? It's properly, fully, 'Self-Assessed' me? What do I do now?? I clearly don't owe any tax...I've paid my tax absolutely legitimately through PAYE! I'm a teacher! It's done accurately through the county council. If they took any more off me I'd have nothing left 😢😢 The amount on the generated thing today accurately matches my P60 so I know it's an error! They've already had it 😢😢

Plus...I need to actually submit my return...and can't until it's done properly...without this error! Can anyone tell me how to sort this before submitting it?

Thank you.

I've not done online, but with my paper return, near where you put in money earned, there's a box to say tax paid on earnings. e.g. 3.7 for taxable Pay, 3.8 for tax paid. (box numbers made up)
Are you sure you haven't missed out filling in the tax paid on employment box?

I had a similar issue, my marriage allowance deduction has gone missing. I haven’t submitted, but asked HMRC why this has happened and they said it’s sorted when we submit the tax return, it will show in the statement online

Needless to say I’m wary

ohwheniknow · 30/12/2019 18:39

Well if you don't input the info of your paye tax paid it can't take it into account. So go back and fill it out properly.

northernknickers · 30/12/2019 19:43

@ohwheniknow I am asking because I couldn't work out what I have done wrong...as I said...the screens have changed since I last did it. This isn't something I'm used to doing...not my field of expertise at all 😳 A simple 'have you checked the tax paid box?' would have been kinder 👍 I'll go back in and check. I did put my month 12 salary information from my P60 somewhere. Maybe I put it in incorrectly, or in the wrong place. ('Probably' put it in the wrong place!)

Unless you understand these things it's easy to make mistakes. Hence my post. I have nobody else to ask 🤷‍♀️

Thanks to everyone else who was gentler with my ineptitude ☺️

From the little I have gathered so far, it is calculated very differently. They don't talk about expenses but an allowance upeople to £1,000 (but can't fathom what this accounts for) and I didn't see anything that ask for interest payments. However, I went on a Let to buy tax calculation, and it makes some allowance for interests payments, so confused. Ultimately, I know I filled it wrong because otherwise, it would mean that I am paying more in tax that 50% of the rental income, when this added to my pays certainly doesn't take me to that threshold. Itried to call them yesterday but I couldn't even get through to speak to someone. When you get someone though, they are brilliant and very helpful.

What you need to consider is that you might have to pay for last year but also an advance for this year. That might not have been the case last year if it was your first year getting rental income.

If it's less than £2500 you dont need to complete a tax return and can just call HMRC to report the amount.

sandgrown · 31/12/2019 10:41

I had to ring them yesterday and despite being told it would be a long wait I got through quickly. I was helped by a very nice lady but have just realised I have to wait 7 days for an access code ! It is my first time but not finding it the easiest process .

northernknickers · 31/12/2019 11:15

Agreed @goteam and @sandgrown. It’s become VERY complicated this year! I might try ringing now.

I rang...they were indeed very helpful and it didn't take that long to get through. All sorted now, and I get £41 back 😂😂 result 👍

Glad it's sorted. I have to report a tiny amount too each year (a few hundred quid) and they are always helpful when I call
