Moving in with mum long story she wants 100 pounds a week for gas elec water and a 40 pound per month increase in council tax and 50 for food she has no mortgage and comfortable pension is that fair?

Well you do need to cover the increase in council tax so that's fair enough. In regards to the rest - is she on a water meter? There's the tv license, the extra gas/electric, wifi, food. If she's mortgage free then I'd say £200-250pmth is resonable tbh. But to be fair what would a flat/room share in your area be? Is it possible she's just not keen for you to move in?

My mum is on a water meter and watches her electric smart meter like a hawk! (she's a old school WW2 baby), and still quibbles about filling the bath full, filling a kettle over 1 cup of teas worth, she wages a one woman defense against tumble dryers, and godforbid you use a hairdryer for over 3mins 🙄 Sometimes old habits die hard!

I would take her up on her offer of everything except the food. And then I’d manage my own food budget. (Just be careful not to cause upset with shared things like tea/coffee/milk.)

She's comfortably off as you say and she's charging you that much to leave an abusive relationship?? Jesus.

Bluerussian · 31/12/2019 03:49

Well done you for leaving your relationship. What your mother is proposing to charge is not unreasonable compared to most rentals but is unusual for a mother to charge her adult child, I'd have expected her to help you more.

Do suggest buying your own food.

You don't earn much. Is there the possibility of you getting a better job now you're on your own?
