Nationwide credit card - transaction verification for additional cardholders

AChickenCalledDaal · 21/12/2019 16:15

Just tried to make an online transaction on my Nationwide credit card. I use this card roughly 2 or 3 times a day; it's our main card for household expenses. I am the additional cardholder. It suits us to have a joint card, so that household expenses are all together on one account.

I was using a different computer than usual (DD's laptop) and, not unexpectedly, Nationwide wanted to send a code to my mobile. Fine. I agree with internet security. Except the code never arrived. Turns out it had been sent to DH's mobile, as he's the main cardholder.

Just phoned them up - this is correct - they cannot record a second mobile number for the additional cardholder. Despite the fact I've been a Nationwide customer in my own right for 25+ years and they already have my mobile number on file for all my other accounts. This I had checked, as I knew they were going to start using three factor authorisation. However, it appears all transactions must be verified by my husband Angry.

If anyone can point us to a provider that doesn't work like this, I'll be very happy. Otherwise, since there's a good chance DH will be in a meeting, out of the country, or simply ignoring his mobile when I'm making online purchases, I guess I will now need to get yet another card, just because Nationwide's systems aren't clever enough for the 21st century.

If DH is in meetings all day, can you be the main cardholder and he be additional?

My HSBC card does the same thing, I get the text whether it's me or DPs card that's purchasing... as does our business First Direct.

AChickenCalledDaal · 21/12/2019 17:08

Could do, but I'm just as likely to be uncontactable when he needs to make a transaction. It just seems utterly nonsensical to send the verification text to someone that could easily be in another room, another building or even another timezone.

We have a John Lewis Credit card. I am an additional cardholder. If the transaction is on my card they send the verification code to MY mobile.

Plus we get John Lewis vouchers a couple of times a year... around £100 a time based on our spending. We put almost everything on the card and pay off in full each month.

MrsJoshNavidi · 23/12/2019 18:10

Get a credit card each. It's a pain I know, but it's the law. There is no such thing as a "joint account" on a credit card. The account holder can choose to give someone a card to use his/her account, but you are not an account holder.

KittenVsXmastree · 23/12/2019 18:17

Oh, fcuk. I wonder when our credit card is moving to this level of authentication. We are in exactly the same position.....

KittenVsXmastree · 23/12/2019 18:18

Just a thought having posted that - can you find someone that gives you the choice of emailing or text messaging, and have the number as DHs, but email as yours for example?

AChickenCalledDaal · 24/12/2019 11:03

Interesting that John Lewis don't do that. We used to have a Partnership card but don't use it any more.

I do realise that there can only be one account holder. I don't understand why that translates to only one person being able to verify transactions by mobile. They are perfectly happy for me to use my own PIN number in shops, or my own signature where PIN isn't available. So why not my own mobile number? I think they have just not thought it through.

Just change DH main number to your number if your the main user Its what we did
Generally it’s only if the transaction is suspicious or from abroad

TheDrsDocMartens · 25/12/2019 06:31

We have nationwide and it only does it if it’s suspicious.

lljkk · 25/12/2019 06:33

This is why I resist 'two stage' verification. DH keeps moaning at me I should embrace it, but just another pile of hassle.

Cash is best anyway.

AChickenCalledDaal · 25/12/2019 16:50

In this particular case, "suspicious" amounted to me using my daughter's laptop to pay an important bill for my dad. I knew they would probably want to verify it, so I had my mobile to hand. Just as well DH was on the ball and paying attention to him mobile. Normally he leaves it on silent and doesn't look at it unless at work.

Loads of our family’s cards have changed recently to this method, I assumed it was due to GDPR. Nationwide are pissing me off though for the following reasons:

We used to have a NW mortgage, now mortgage free and DHs mobile was attached to that. No idea why as I have always put my name first on any joint financial applications.

I also have three other savings accounts all in my name. Those three and the mortgage could be accessed from MY online banking, DH had no online banking account.

Yet, whenever I do any banking, the authorisation text comes to HIM.

I can’t change the mobile number on online banking in My Account either. It’s ridiculous, I guess I will have to complain to get any solution.

PlumsGalore · 26/12/2019 07:01

Nationwide has changed recently, depends whether you use their little card authorisation machine or use memorable data and/or the App.

Iamanaubergine · 26/12/2019 07:15

We have a Tesco credit card and they have both of our mobile numbers- so will message whoever is doing the transaction.

TreeSwayer · 26/12/2019 07:25

Iam we are also with Tesco and they have definitely made sure that they have both our numbers as I am the second card holder.

We haven't needed a verification code yet and I am wondering how they will know who is using the card as they are the exact same number. I am assuming they will send a code to both phones.

My MIL used to also be an additional card holder for another bank but her card was a different number to FIL so his transactions were listed separately to hers on their bill.

WTCT · 26/12/2019 07:43

Is it not a joint account?

Additional card holder implies the account is in DH name in which case, it kind of makes sense as he will be liable for all transactions on the account...

GrumpyHoonMain · 26/12/2019 07:47

All companies do this because the main cardholder is the customer, not additional cardholders

grannycake · 26/12/2019 08:05

american express allows my DH to add his mobile number but he has to set up separate online access to do so. He is the additional cardholder

AChickenCalledDaal · 26/12/2019 10:01

We phoned Nationwide and their position is indeed that DH has to authorise all transactions. But that is not true. Because I have my own PIN, my own signature and my own password on their original 3D verification system, all of which are accepted to authorise transactions on the second card in other circumstances. They just haven't provided the same facility for this particular system.

It's useful to hear that Tesco and John Lewis allow for separate mobile numbers. Thanks to those who mentioned that.

I have B card and dd has a second card and it's recently changed to the same, but only on some transactions. But they have been taken over by Virgin so it could for that reason. Dd spends a lot of time abroad which is why we got it.
