How does the Post Office count their coin bags?

Hi,

I apologise if this sounds silly but I'm just wondering how do they count their coin bags?

Today I took my sons cash notes to the post office to exchange for coins. I know this is silly as ultimately he will get it changed into notes, but whilst he is young he is excited to see his coin jar growing.
Anyway, today I handed over £100 and was handed 5 bags of pound coins, 20 in each.
When I got home I counted each bag and one of them only had 19 coins in. I recounted it several times, emptied my handbag etc and checked the area I was counting the coins, and nothing. There is still only 19 in there.

Would you say anything or just let it go? I always thought they weighed coin bags so I can't understand why it's short. I'm abit embarrassed asking over the sake of a pound but I can't get my head around why its short.

TIA x

Well you could go and ask as while it's trivial it's also weird that it's short.

I thought they had a machine to count coins, in response to the other bit.

I also think it's a bit nuts to change all that note into coin but that's your prerogative Grin

They don't count, they weigh. I'm not sure how that happened or what you can do.

kinsss · 20/12/2019 18:27

Weighed.

SpideyMom · 20/12/2019 18:28

His only 5 so the novelty of seeing the coins get higher is still there.

And exactly. I thought they weighed them too. I'm embarrassed to be honest as I am a regular there, and it's a pound but I cannot understand why its short. I must have counted it 10 times, and checked around where the coins had been. So I know I am right but I can imagine they will turn round and say we weigh them so it's impossible, to which all I can say is look I really wouldn't be bringing this to your attention over a pound if it really was in the bag

They weigh them, but if a few bags are placed on the weigher (?) at the same time it can be out by a couple of quid

SpideyMom · 20/12/2019 18:31

Would you say anything?

Not for a pound really. I'd let it go.

Ariela · 20/12/2019 18:34

I would say to them : if you find your till is £1 over - one of my bags was £1 short.

Obviously you cannot prove it but they weigh fairly accurately, I had a dud coin on about £100 of £1 coins and they knew it was out, so weighed each bag individually then checked the bag that was short to find the dud coin (it was foreign and I'd not noticed)

SpideyMom · 20/12/2019 18:55

OK thank you. I'm going to check to make sure they are all the right coins

Nope no foreign coins

Have you got 21 in one bag by any chance? If they weigh several together?

SpideyMom · 20/12/2019 20:48

No, all others are spot on £20.

Because I know them now and we have a chat when I'm in there, I may just ask if they were a pound over when cashing up as one of the bags were a pound down and take it from there. And if they are adament they are accurate I will just accept it but will have to say do you honestly think I'd be asking for the sake of a pound if it is there.

Sooooo it's there. I called and we laughed about it and he said straight away even before I'd finished. It's here. It was left in the bottom of the tray so the bad couldn't have been sealed properly
