Car Insurance question

I wonder if anyone knows the answer to my problem? At the weekend, I cracked the windscreen of my car. I rang autoglass and made an appointment to get it fixed for tomorrow. UI then dug out the insurance document - to discover that it ran out last week. Gulp panic. Have insured the car now, but there is a gap in the insurance. Will I still be covered for the windscreen tomorrow if it happened when I wasn't insured? Oh help - why am I so disorganized?

I'm sure you could blag it if you ask the autoglass guy to put the "proper" date on the form etc.

I would cancel the appt

then a few weeks go along and say ould you belive it my windscreen broke yesturday

im sure they wont even know you are you esp as youve not even met them!

Did you renew with the same company? If so, they would have started the policy from the date your old one expired as they usually have a 14 day period in which they do this. If not, then dont let them come out tomorrow as they may let it go through and then bill you.

Anyone got anny idea how much a windscreen costs roughly if I'm not covered?

No idea but when you do find out, you can console yourself with the fact that you didn't realise your insurance had run out after reversing into a Jag or Porsche!

Depends on the car and the sensors it has re price - i see bills from £150 to £1000.

thank you - one more question, please. I realize that I'll probably have to pay - and serves me right, but will I have to pay up front today or will I get billed by the insurance company?

Quick and puzzling update. I decided to ring Autoglass and fling myself on their mercy - and they said "no problem - it's all gone through" Don't understand at all!

Seeker I'm glad your problem is sorted now. Just as an aside though your insurance company should send out renewal documents a few weeks before renewal with your policy details and premium for the next 12 months. If they didn't send those and you forgot to renew you have a good case to have your cover reinstated with no break. Just threaten them with the Financial Ombudsmen and they'll see sense. As an ex employee of an insurance co I'm afraid I can't condone date fiddling. If autoglass kept a record of your initial enquiry and you were found out you could end up having your cover cancelled, your premium kept and be unable to get further cover without paying an extortionate premium - would it be worth it?
