Anyone done it? DH and I have been considering it for some time. We've had a rough few years and we just need a break but is it the right thing to do?

Depends on what your plan is

Stay at home
Travel
Try new things
Are you self motivated or procrastinator?

Travel a bit but we have pets so not a full 6 months away. More just to have a bit of time to indulge in hobbies and see what the world has to offer.

Very self motivated.

Yes it’s a wonderful idea! Time to rest and recharge. I read an article once suggesting persons have smaller retirements dotted through adult life. As we enjoy different things now than we might when in our 70’s.
I also suggest not putting too much pressure on to achieve something or go somewhere. Many people will be cross with you unless you say you are going on an arctic expedition. When the reality is reading books, walking the dog and a few nice trips will be a wonderful way to spend time and more than anything will restore your mental health.
Go for it!

I think it's a great idea too...I'm jealous!
I guess you both have jobs you could happily leave behind, but able to find work again easily after your time off (and of course the money to fund the break?)
