Supermarket mess

Apologies in advance for the lengthy of this post. I bought a new full length waterproof down coat from m&s approximately 6 weeks ago in store. 1 month ago, I was wearing the coat, while in my local supermarket, when I got to the self service checkout, I realised a bottle of bleach in my basket had leaked, the groceries were all replaced, and I manage to mop up the bleach from the woollen cuffs, before it had caused any damage. A couple of days later I noticed a bleach stain further down the front of my coat, I contacted the supermarket, the supervisor who had helped, remembered me, and the incident, told me to bring in my receipt if I still had it, and I would be reimbursed in full. Sod’s law, I couldn’t find the receipt, but the coat was still available on the m&s website. I sent in screenshots, plus a photo of the label, which had the item number on it. Was told all info would be sent to head office, and I would have the money (€140) in a few days. 2 weeks later , after numerous phone calls, I was told Today they can only reimburse me, if I leave my coat with them for insurance purposes. My issue is, the coat is now out of stock, and can’t be replaced, if they had acted quicker, I could have easily replaced it, I don’t drive, the weather is shite, and it’s the only heavy waterproof coat I own, what should I do? Are they entitled to ask to keep my coat?

I think if they are going to pay out that you should give them your coat.

Wehttam · 22/11/2019 23:06

Give them your bloody coat and get the money for a newer one! How can you only own one coat?

BritInUS1 · 22/11/2019 23:13

I don't think it's unreasonable of them to ask for the coat

@Wehttam - I only have one coat !

daffydowndilys · 22/11/2019 23:14

How bad is the mark if you didn't notice it for a few days?

coldfeetallthetime · 22/11/2019 23:15

Agree with the others. You can’t expect a refund and to get to keep the ruined item. I think a partial payment towards cost of cost and getting to keep the cost sounds reasonable.

Rgibney · 22/11/2019 23:30

I only own one waterproof one, sorry if you find that incomprehensible. And as it’s been raining every bloody day for the past week with more to come, I would quite like to keep my coat, while I try and find a replacement, I don’t think I’m being unreasonable, but obviously I am.

Rgibney · 22/11/2019 23:36

I didn’t notice it sooner, because I hadn’t worn it since the spillage occurred.

coldfeetallthetime · 22/11/2019 23:37

But you’ve needed it every day because it’s been so wet and you can’t possibly be parted with it Confused

WinkysTeatowel · 22/11/2019 23:49

Essentially they are buying it from you, you can’t have the money and the coat too.

Rgibney · 22/11/2019 23:51

It’s not a refund, I didn’t buy the coat in tescos where the spillage occurred, the money is to replace the damaged piece of clothing.

teabagleftin · 22/11/2019 23:54

@wehttam lots of people only have one coat ffs Hmm lots of people don’t even own a coat and have to use foodbanks too. Must be nice in your ivory tower.

Poissonpoison · 22/11/2019 23:56

How strange, I ripped a dress on a display in tesco a few months ago and they refunded me there and then out of the till with the manufacturers website as proof of cost.

PurpleFrames · 23/11/2019 00:07

Absolutely you should expect to give them the coat. It's not like you'll be without one for years. (I only have one coat).

Rgibney · 23/11/2019 00:22

The coat was damaged 1 month ago, on a Saturday morning, I wore it next on the Tuesday, is that ok? Jesus I’ve been told this site was full of toxic bitches, and to avoid like the plague, I had occasionally popped on, but had never posted before, so hadn’t actually noticed, so thanks for all the helpful remarks and condescending advice. Over and most definitely out.

Charming

@Rgibney It is not a case of being unreasonable I wouldn't say, instead I would think it's more the case of being a little stubborn.

I say that in good nature and do not mean to offend at all but what I mean is the coat is effectively worn (regardless of how new) as you have now had it a number of weeks. The supermarket have offered to cover the full cost of what you had originally paid for it, I personally would snap their hand off and take the money.

Black Friday is coming up, you may very well find a similar coat at a lower price to the one you originally bought. I understand it is inconvenient and being without the coat isn't ideal when the weather isn't great (I'm from Ireland and it has rained here every day for the last fortnight, so I feel your pain) but it just makes more sense to give them the coat and take the full amount for a new one.

PlumsGalore · 23/11/2019 08:01

I think the supermarket have been more than reasonable in reimbursing you but wanting the coat back. I agree you can’t have it both ways.

Dontdisturbmenow · 23/11/2019 11:58

You know you are being unreasonable. What you want is to keep wearing the coat, probably because the stain in minute, hence once you didn't notice for some time, but cash in the £140.

It doesn't work like that and good on the supermarket to ask for the coat. Of course you could go shopping for a new one today, put in on your credit card, and send the other on Monday, but this is so obvious, it's hard to believe your excuse.

Kyriesmum1 · 27/11/2019 21:32

Hi my ugg boots got ruined by a faulty diesel pump at ASDA, I had my receipt but they also took the boots from me upon paying out. I think it's policy to ensure you don't say they are ruined beyond use and then continue to wear them!

BarbaraofSeville · 28/11/2019 08:52

They probably want the coat because some people might go round multiple supermarkets claiming that their coat had been ruined by leaky bleach hoping to get a refund from more than one shop.

It's bad that they've not handled this very well and their delays have led to the coat being effectively irreplaceable plus the issue that you only have one coat, can't afford to buy a second one without the money and can't do without the coat due to the constant pissing rain, is there anyone you could borrow a coat from, or could you look for one in a charity shop?
