Many families of 5 live on less including toiletries. I'm spending about £40 for 2 adults mostly veggie

My partner and I have £200 a month for food, loo roll, cleaning supplies etc. We find that’s usually plenty & sometimes we can squeeze a takeaway out of it too! We don’t eat much meat & I often batch cook. Also helps that we’re both fussy in different ways so often eat quite simply!

Notreallyhappy · 31/10/2019 10:52

That should be ok...the average spend (eat well for less) £105 for 3 adults, so that's £35 per head..

Struggle with cooking thats my problem!!

Yes, its doable. I've done it on less than £200 this month and that included gin :)

Cooking is easy, just spend time in the kitchen trying it out.

itbemay1 · 31/10/2019 13:48

You could get gousto boxes with meals delivered for less

Notreallyhappy · 31/10/2019 14:46

Find a few basic recipes...
Basic Bolognaise can be chilli with added Beans & spice.
Google is good for it..BBC food website.
There's nothing wrong with a jar of curry if your not a kitchen champion.
Just make a list / menu of what you want for dinner for a few days & shop for this.
Nothing more wasteful than a fridge / cupboard full of stuff not being used.

We spend £60 a week on average I’d say. We are two adults and three kids under 12.

Maybe around £20 a month on toiletries I don’t get at Lidl.

Your budget seems plenty :)

GuessWhoColeen · 31/10/2019 14:51

So £87.50 a week all in?

I would say that is plenty.

We have just tried Tesco spring force toilet roll at £2.20 for 9 and its great, plus we get deodrant, soap (cheaper than shower gel) shampoo and toothpaste either in Tesco, poundland or B&M only when its on offer.

So I reckon you should be fine.

Notreallyhappy · 31/10/2019 15:37

Also Aldi shave gel, shower cream, men's deodorant & ladies body spray & roll on really good for less than b& m

MaybeitsMaybelline · 01/11/2019 04:25

Easy. 120 a week here for four adults, two cats, lunches included and all cleaning and toiletry products. We eat very very well, I do cook from scratch almost all the time, although I may buy the odd ready meal from the reduced fridge. I love a reduced fridge. We also eat quality meat, fish and branded products and shop at Morrisons, Tesco and Asda mostly.

My hubby likes diet coke I'm now refusing to buy beer or diet coke in a food budget and I'm trying to do afew cheap teas...chicken burgers salad and oven fries went down well!!!

That’s ridiculously high what are you buying?

INeedNewShoes · 02/11/2019 20:13

My hunch is that this might be a false economy as the nutritional value will be fairly low (unless it was a big salad and decent quality chicken burgers with a good portion of protein) in relation to the cost of the meal and you may well end up hungry later and reaching for snacks. Snacks tend to be pricey and ramp up the food budget.

For filling food on a budget I’d consider batch cooking things like chilli and basic curries from scratch.

sheard · 03/11/2019 20:58

I dont buy alot of meat he does insist in bottled water but I limit to one pack at 2 pounds I buy cheese bread pack up meat fruit bit of veg things like mince garlic bread usually breaded chicken oven chips I do some sort of curry or chilli usually but I admit it's usually a jar in slow cooker but only supermarket own maybe a chicken for sunday roast I dont know how it gets to the total!
