Klarna debt sold to debt collection agency

I made an Asos purchase with klarna a few months ago and returned it. I didn't hear anything from Klarna so forgot all about it, assuming all was well. However, today I received a text from what I now know to be a debt collection agency asking me to call them. I checked through my emails and can see now I didn't get a returns confirmation (I know, my fault for not noticing earlier). I contacted klarna to see if I could pay them but they said no as the debt has now been sold on.

I'm just looking for a bit of advice before I contact the debt collection agency because I have no experience of dealing with them. What kind of things should I be asking them? And I can see the company has an online payment facility, am I best to pay it this way so I have a record of the payment? Also, are they likely to add money to the original debt? The debt is only £80 so I'm able to pay it but just worrying it will have gone up as it was sold. Also, I've had a look at my credit file and there's no record of this debt will it go on my file if I pay quickly?

Sorry if these are daft questions but as I said it was a genuine oversight on my part and I've never had any debt issues so am totally clueless about how this all works.

Thank you in advance!

How did you return the item to ASOS. Have you spoken with them yet?

RedHelenB · 26/10/2019 11:22

If you owe the money then just get it paid asap and make sure you gave a record of it.

Hoppinggreen · 26/10/2019 11:24

Just pay it, get a receipt and forget it

AgnesNaismith · 26/10/2019 11:25

No!!! Don’t pay it and get on with it!!! Get in touch with ASOS and let them know what happened today.

dazzlinghaze · 26/10/2019 11:50

I sent it back with Royal Mail and I've lost the receipt Blush so there's no proof I ever sent it so I'll need to pay it. Will they just want the original £80 do you think?

I'm so annoyed with myself, I use klarna quite a bit when I'm buying a big order of clothes so I don't need to pay before I know if they fit and I'm usually really organised with checking the app to see what I owe and when but because I sent the entire order back I totally forgot about it. Lesson learned!!

Firstly you should have been informed in writing by both the original creditor and the debt collection agency of the intended sale of this alleged debt, without this they cannot take any action against you to recover any monies, are you sure this is a separate debt collection company making the claim for payment, or is it the original creditors in House recovery dept? They cannot add any further charges outside of any late payment penalty that is in force in the original agreement, obviously you are not in dispute that you owe the money and are willing to pay, however it is important to verify who now legally owns the debt, before paying as you could pay then find yourself being further pursued for the same debt, any negative marks on your credit file should be removed if they haven't followed the correct procedures prior to selling the debt.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 27/10/2019 19:46

Klarna should have contacted you well before they sold the debt. Usually more than once.
You should still complain to asos.

greypetex · 27/10/2019 19:47

Klarna never emailed you at any time when the payment didn't go through?

dazzlinghaze · 28/10/2019 12:25

No I never had anything from klarna except from the usual email reminder that my month to pay was almost up but I'd sent the parcel back a couple of days before so just ignored like I usually would. Apart from that I've heard nothing from Klarna. Also all I've had from the debt collectors is a text asking them to call a number. Should I call them or wait for them to get in touch with me by phone or writing?

When I spoke to klarna on Friday they said the debt company now owns the debt. I had a look on twitter and this seems to be quite common with Asos and klarna unfortunately.

I also mentioned it to my friend on Saturday and she said she'd had a debt passed from
Klarna passed on to a collection agency (she just didn't pay it) and she said she'd not had any letters from the debt collection agency, just the same text as I've received and some phone calls. She said she answered and the woman on the phone wouldn't go into detail about what the matter was and just said it was regarding klarna and kept asking my friend to confirm her identity. She said no and the woman said she would email her but never has and this was a few months ago. I wonder why the debt collection agency isn't sending any letters?

hey, @dazzlinghaze i have recently had the exact same issue! did you get it sorted or have to pay back? i returned all my items so it seems unfair i have to pay for something i never kept! i dont know what to do about the situation

LemmysAceCard · 19/05/2020 10:30

Do you have proof that you returned everything? if you dont then you dont really have a case. Sorry i know that is probably not what you were hoping for.

if you have proof then that is a different matter

Tabithha · 19/05/2020 12:24

Unfortunately you’ll have to pay if you don’t have proof of the return. The same thing almost happened to me but thankfully found my receipt. I now keep all my return receipts until I’ve received an email confirming they’ve received my return
