Child benefit / NI Contributions

In brief: if you are not claiming child benefit (due to higher tax bracket) should you still be informing the HMRC?

I he'd a thought that maybe somebody at some point told me you should still inform HMRC because this changes your NI contributions for the mat leave. This is a good thing for your stare pension - I think!

Did I get this right? I am just coming out of the newborn haze and it's quite possible I dreamt up the whole thing 🙄😂 Any ideas on how to do this, in case I have got it right?

Any advice gratefully received!

Claim child benefit and opt out of payment to get NI credits

From .Gov website:

You can choose not to get Child Benefit payments, but you should still fill in the Child Benefit claim form. This will help you getNational Insurance creditswhich count towards yourState Pension.

Claiming Child Benefit also means your child will get theirNational Insurance numberautomatically shortly before they’re 16. They will not have to apply for one themselves.
