I've been contracting for a bank for a year and they want me to go permanent. They have asked me what is my number. I haven't come across this before. Well in my last temp role the same thing happened but I didn't want the job so said no thanks. I'm not sure how best to proceed. It feels like they are asking me "what's the lowest number you'd work for" when I'd much rather the question be "whats the max you would be prepared fo pay me"

Wondering if theres anyone who may have advice on how I should proceed. Thank you

Generally a permanent job pays a little below the contractor rate, the exact level obviously varies by industry. You could also look online to see what your potential employers and similar roles pay. Ultimately if they will convert to a contract at the rate you are currently getting it's a good deal

HR here and agree with above that contractor rates are usually higher than employee salaries. That said you will also need to factor in the extra benefits you would receive from being an employee.... pension, holiday and sickness pay any medical plans etc etc.

I'd take a look at market rates and also have a think about what you'd need to be offered to accept the role and give them a figure. Don't low ball it, if they're paying you as a contractor you are probably quite an expensive option for them at the moment so you may be pleasantly surprised.
