Paying back Child Benefit overpayment

I claimed CB for 2018/9 as DH income is variable and wasn't sure if we would be under £50k threshold.

It became apparent in January 2019 that he would reach £60k so I called on 7th Jan to stop future payment and now I claim £0 but am still registered to keep my own NI pension credits up. They advised that £1307 had been paid from 6th April '18 - 7th Jan '19 and that was the figure owed by end Jan 2020.

DH completed his self assessment today (he is PAYE) and we have used correct figures on April 2019 P60.

We filled in the gov.uk calculator as £60400 earned with £117 BIK for private healthcare and £1400 pension contributions.

The estimated amount to repay is £799 based on the info we provided on a part year claim for 2 children. I noticed that my DH tax free allowance was automatically entered on the form in the calculation.

Is this correct?? I thought we had to pay the full amount of £1307 (or thereabouts allowing for pension).

Help!! Don't want to owe anything further down the line if this isn't right....

The amount it has calculated will be all tax and the child benefit high income charge combined, so he has probably overpaid tax and would otherwise be due a refund.

Thanks. He paid approx £14100 in tax so I hope there has been an overpayment and that the £799 is right!!

I had a feeling we would have to pay it back so thankfully I had paid it into a savings account and it's there to repay.

If he has completed it on the HMRC self assessment site, he can get a detailed calculation which goes through the various information - so you should be able to check it though and also make sure the figures agree to your source information.
If he has done this it isn't an estimate, it is his calculation based on his figures, so not quite sure what you mean by estimate in your original post.

Our figures were definitely correct (they were all taken from p60 and no other income, investments etc.) so I'm hoping that the £799 that came up on the calculator will be the amount payable.

Once the self assessment was submitted it advised that it would be processed within 72hrs.

It's the one thing that really stresses me out for some reason! Hate having to do tax returns when PAYE, although I'm upset we don't receive CB anymore it's easier to take no payment.

The calculation won't change, the processing is just it going through the system.

Thanks Chasing
