Any benefits for 18 year old unable to work?

DS has finished A levels, has been doing bar work for a couple of months, but is about to undergo a medical procedure that will keep him pretty immobile and unable to work for up to 9 months.
It is a procedure to address a congenital abnormality, but he is not classed as disabled, and this procedure will prevent him from being disabled in the future, once complete.

I am clueless about any benefits. Will be be eligible for JobSeekers while unable to work?
Is he entitled to anything as an 18 year old living at home?
We have tried to do one of the online calculators but it just doesn't cover his circumstances.

Should he go down to the JobCentre and find out?

He can claim Universal credit, he can make the application online then will need to go to the Jobcentre for a quick Id appointment. It would be best to do this before he has his procedure. He will need to hand in sick notes to avoid being asked to seek work.

As pp said universal credit. While in hospital he would be treated as too ill to work. He will need a fit more and will be assessed for whether he could work. Link to CAB section on universal credit and illness but he can explore from there.

What they said! He will get about £250/month. If he has a work capability assessment and they decide he is not capable of any "work-related activity" he will get extra... but that's not guaranteed and wouldn't be for a few months.
