Starting a small business for dd1

Not sure if I have posted in the right place.

Dd is almost 16 and her sister is almost 14. Eldest dd is studying business at school, she wants a job but due to several conditions she has (including ASD and some mobility issues) she’s unable to do most of the jobs available to teenagers, her younger sister is more severely autistic and is unlikely to ever find a work placement.

Without giving too much detail, would it be possible for dd1 to have a small business (think selling a product which is handmade through eBay)? Does she have to be 16/18 to set up a business in her name? I’m not expecting huge profits but was thinking it could benefit her studies as she plans on taking A levels based around business and computing. I’m hoping dd2 can be a part of it too.

Has anyone or anyone’s dc done something similar?

As long as it's her who is genuinely making/selling the stuff, then, yes, she can be self employed, as can anyone. She may have problems entering into contracts, opening a bank account etc with her being a minor, but that's practical problems not legal problems.

Just be careful if you end up using your bank account or using your details to create her a ebay store etc as HMRC may pick up on it and it may cause suspicions with any benefits you claim etc.

Thank you, apparently you have to be 18 to sell on eBay so it might be a bit tricky. Just thought it would be a good thing to help her with her business studies, they do similar things at school but not selling online.

Does Etsy have an age restriction? As an alternative ....

I will have a look at Etsy. I’m guessing she could sell through a Facebook page? I will look into the options and see if it’s doable.

Can she set up a website, then advertise on Facebook and Instagram to drive sales there? I had a business (subscription boxes) which worked well from this set up.

What about makers/craft markets? Would she manage that? There are lots around us, and some which specifically feature businesses where people have additional needs, be that physical/mental/emotional. We got some gorgeous screen printed and tie dyed toddler clothes from the last one, the makers had significant learning difficulties and were there, but someone (mum maybe?) was supporting them with the cash, confidence to interact etc.

twirlypoo that’s a possibility as she’s a dab hand at things like that (web design). At the moment I’m trying to get her motivated to actually do it, she’s excited about the computer and business side of it but not the making on the product 🤣

Craft markets are a good idea, I have sold at a few. With Christmas coming up there should be quite a few.
