I graduated a few months ago and & struggling to get a job. I have 2 kids & a single mother. I want to get a stall from the council to sell things on market days (Friday's & Saturdays in Colchester ) I am wondering if I could get suggestions of what I can sell in the stall, please.

As I'm sure you're aware, the market in Colchester is really struggling to survive.

You would have to have a passion to bring successful goods to the market. What is your degree in/what's your creative streak/What are the options you can offer?

A town that I used to visit, the market is nearly non existent now.
We think causes are
Pound shops selling everything indoors
People buying all sorts of things on the internet, with free next day delivery
Bad weather
Costs of the stall

You also have to take into account transport of your goods to & from the market

In some other towns, markets are thriving

The food in no packaging is doing well in some places. Bring your own box, jar etc

Unpackaged food is a good idea. There's one that's just stated up in our local market and it seems to be doing well.

What did you graduate in ?
What jobs have you applied for ?

fuzzyduck1 · 28/09/2019 02:09

Brave.

I did the markets for a couple of years and there just isn’t any money in it any more. Use to sell lingerie but with Ann summers moving onto the high street and the rise of the internet that put an end to that.

Although thinking of going into it again at festivals selling jewellery keeping stock light and set up times to a minimum.

I have applied for a lot of jobs and different types of jobs expect care jobs and jobs that require lifting (labour) for medical reasons. I studied International Relations- I can work in any field basically but luck isn't on my side 🙄 & I am really struggling now and in debt😔

what do you have access to? i sell honey at a weekly farmers market, of course that mean bees hives and processing equipment. next to me is a baker, does very very well (pizza, pretzels, cookies, muffins), another gal makes and sells soaps uses her ensuite bathroom to cure the soap untouched.

I know that self employed is good for some people
However, it doesn't beat a permanent job contract with paid holiday, paid sickness, employer pension contributions & other benefits

Have you looked at selling on Etsy, auctions, car boot sales, house clearances ?

I was at a market in the summer in a small town. Cup cakes £2.70 each. I thought that this was too much & didn't buy one. But I expect if the stall holder had to pay to put up the stall, ingredients, wages, this was probably the correct price
