Add up the total of all the Uc elements you are entitled to - standard, child, rent, disability, carers etc.
Take net monthly wages, if you are paid weekly this will vary depending whether there are four or five paydays in your Uc assessment period.
From net monthly pay take off a work allowance if you get one. If you have children or limited capability for work you will get one. It is £287 if you claim the rent element of Uc and £503 if you don't. Multiply the remainder by 0.63. This amount is what is deducted from your total Uc for wages.
For example a couple over 25 with 2 children and a mortgage will get £498.89 couples element and £508.67 child elements so total Uc = £1007.56.
If net earnings are £1000in the assessment period it will be 1000- 503 ( work allowance) x 0.63 =£313.11 deduction.
£1007.56 - £313.11 = £694.45 Universal credit paid. Any further deductions for advances or overpayments will then come off this amount.

Hi I'm so sorry to jump on this thread but wonder if someone could answer this question for me....
I am due to return to work full time following maternity leave. My husband also works full time. Consequently our income will go up from when I was on maternity and receiving some universal credit. However our childcare costs will shoot up too.
How is the childcare element calculated please? I know there is the 85% figure but is this calculated proportional to income? To give an idea our childcare costs will be approx £1,750 which is about 50% of our joint income.

@Babyroobs you look very knowledgable I hope you may be able to help?

Babyroobs · 27/09/2019 23:26

The childcare element is calculated as 85% of costs up to a certain point ( sorry I can't remember the exact limit ). Then this is paid as an element along with your other elements ( standard, child, rent etc). Wages the reduce your total award. I'm sorry but I think £1750 may be quite a bit higher than the limit.

There's a page on fb called universal credit essentials who help you calculate and will answer any other questions/spot any mistakes if anyone is struggling. The admin are more knowledgeable than most UC staff (not hard I know)
