Child benefit and pension question

Hannah2199 · 27/09/2019 13:56

We don't claim any child benefits as my OH seems over the limit. I'm going to be stopping work to look after our kids soon but my parents have said I need to make sure I still claim national insurance credits to make sure I get full state pension when I retire.

Does anyone know how to do this please? I've tried various government websites but can only find info about stopping payments of child benefit, not anything about if you dont already recieve it.

Thanks

Apply for child benefit and opt out of payment. You still get the NI credits that way, up until your youngest child is 12 I think

Maybe contact HMRC and get your DHs tax code changed as I think you get it paid and then it's clawed back via a tax code.

But this is just a guess I'm not certain.

She needs to apply for child benefit first and then either opt out of payment (if he earns over £60k) or take the payment and then some or all of it is paid back by the high earner declaring it on a self assessment tax return

What do you mean by seems to be over the limit? Does her earn £60k+? What pension contribution does he make? This brings it down, and if he goes under £60k you might be eligible for CB. Be v clear of your figures as you might be opting out of money you could actually have. The online calculators are easy to use and v helpful.

*eligible for some CB

He definitely earns too much to claim child benefit. But I've been told if we dont claim national insurance credits while I'm not working then I wont get full pension. Any ideas how I might be able to do this?

I've told you what to do!! Register for child benefit and opt out of payment

dementedpixie · 27/09/2019 14:59

From the CB link:

By claiming Child Benefit:

  • you can getNational Insurance creditswhich count towards yourState Pension
  • your child will automatically get a National Insurance number when they’re 16 years old

If you choose not to get Child Benefit payments, you should still fill in and send off the claim form.

Yes you fill out the child benefit form exactly the same as if you are applying for child benefit, but tick a box saying you don't want to receive any money.

As PP have said, you still have to fill in the child benefit form but you have to tick to say you are opting out. We had to do exactly the same as my DH is a high earner.
