Do I need to inform tax credits of a third child?

As the title says really. I’ve just had my third child. Obviously I know I won’t receive any tax credits for them which is fine but I do I need to inform tax credits anyway?

I don’t see the point in adding the child on when I’m not entitled to anything but don’t want to get in trouble for not disclosing anything.

Thanks Smile

I would just call and tell them op.

ReformedB0t · 02/09/2019 22:40

I would, when your eldest is too old for you to receive tax credits, a sudden 'new' child on your claim may cause problems .

MyDcAreMarvel · 03/09/2019 00:48

Yes you can fined for not telling them .

Passmethepepsi · 03/09/2019 07:23

Told them all thank you! I didn’t even consider being able to get them once my eldest is too old. Hopefully I’ll have won the lottery by then and don’t need it Grin

You can earn good money and still get tax credits so just incase!! Yes just lay your foundations now incase the lottery win takes a bit longer. Grin The fact you've told them now could mean when your oldest leaves full time education, it just runs on with your new child, if you don't tell them it could take days and weeks to sort and prove, which will be a ballache so you've saved yourself a job! Future you says "thankyou"!!

Are you sure that the third child qualifies eventually? Under the rules I thought a third child was always that and you never get benefits for them.

Kat786 · 03/09/2019 14:24

I'm almost certain that the birth of a new child counts as a change of circumstances which means that a completely new claim will be required to Universal credit. Who will then pay for your 1st 2 children. People on legacy benefits such as tax credits housing benefit ect are being transferred to UC if their circumstances change. And unless the 3rd child is the result of rape or violence then no money will be paid for them . I'm really sorry!

Passmethepepsi · 03/09/2019 21:12

it’s not a change in circumstance that triggers a move to universal credit thankfully. I know I won’t get anything for the third child, this is absolutely fine it’s why I wondered if they needed to be informed as i know there’s entitlement Smile. Eldest is only 7 so it’s far far away yet!

You can still claim for childcare costs for a third child if you’re working so they would need to be on the claim.
In future just tell them anything relevant- always better to be 100% honest and let them decided if it needed reporting.

Yes it’s definitely two children at once unless born before April 2016. Children drop of the claim.

No it doesn’t .

Disability elements are paid for 3 plus children.

Lougle · 03/09/2019 22:28

Yes you need to tell them. Yes, the third child will become the 'second' child once the first child is not a child.

Passmethepepsi · 03/09/2019 23:55

I have told them. Baby is only a few weeks old and not even registered yet which is why I asked now before it was too late. Thanks for the advice everyone Smile
