VAT (I know boring, but quick question)

I provided a one-off training session for a company I used to work for. I submitted my invoice (on a supplier basis knowing I can earn up to £1000 in a tax year).
But I have today received a purchase order and the company has added VAT.
But I am not VAT registered. I didn't add VAT to the agreed fee.
What do I need to do.

Surely you’ll only get paid the amount you invoiced for, regardless of the PO value?

Thank you - that's what I thought as that is what happened last year when I provided the same training.
I just don't know how to sort out. If they pay me the VAT amount I will then have to pay it to HMRC but it is one off and I don't want the hassle of VAT returns etc. Equally I don't want to get in to trouble.
I guess I need to contact them on Tuesday to cancel the PO and have the payment put through again?

Just contact them and tell them you arent VAT registered and to reissue a PO with no VAT

It's their error and they need to correct it. They can't claim the VAT back from someone who isn't VAT registered. I would imagine their accounting software has just added it as standard and someone has forgotten to manually take it off.

thank you all - i'll sort out next week
