Universal Credit - employer error means two payments in assessment period

Asking here first because google gives me no answers, and my experiences of UC advisors is that often they know less than google anyway!

I was on maternity leave, and have returned to work. I get paid monthly on 25th of each month (big, huge employer). My assessment period is 28th-27th of every month, so I always get one income in each assessment period.

HOWEVER, payroll forgot to add me back on the system and they have said I won't get paid this month on the 25th. The soonest they can pay me is the 30th. But this means I'll have two payments in my next assessment period (30th Aug & 25th sept), so I won't get any universal credits at all in October. I can't survive without this - literally can't pay my childcare costs. Is there anything at all I can do to change this?! Can my work provide a letter (I don't know if they will, but I thought I'd ask first if anyone knew if it would even help!) to say I should have been paid the 30th Aug money on 25th Aug, and it's entirely their error that I haven't been.

Does anyone know? Or can anyone signpost to somewhere to get help with this??

They might not be able to PAY you today, but could they PROCESS it through The payroll and do the RTI PAYE reporting today so that's the date that will show?

The payment is then just making good the amount they owe you.

Oh thank you! That's possible then? You're so helpful. I'll ask. Just feel mortified having to explain "so actually.... I get some benefits, and paying me late will be a big problem. And here's how it all works..." etc etc to my manager first and then some payroll person who would have had no reason to know I receive any help, and now I've got to tell them. Gahhhhh. Nothing is ever straight forward with UC. But thanks for the help, the main thing is if I can still receive a UC payment for October!

It depends on them, but it should be possible.

The problem with the payment is they'll be putting it through the BACS system and it has to go to the bank x days in advance.
Although really given it's their cock up they should offer to do an faster payment and get it sorted.

If your employer isn't able to process your pay in this assessment period, you'll receive a payment equivalent of you not earning anything so should be a substantial amount? Could you save some of this for the October period?
I have been in a similar situation before and had to do this Smile

This happened to me, slightly different situ but I got 2 payments from work in one assessment period.

Ring UC before it happens, or put a note on your online journal. They will contact your payroll to check and perhaps ask for wage slips as proof.

They did take 6 weeks to sort mine but hopefully it'll be quicker for you.

TheBrilloPad · 22/08/2019 11:54

Ok, thank you all! Will do all the steps - note in journal, keep wage slips, get payroll to process it all showing as 25th, even if the payment itself is late etc

@Username19 The increase in Septembers payment if I received "no wage" in that period, compared to losing UC in the next period means I'm almost 1K worse off still, due to my employers error. It's literally money I don't have. I spend £1400 a month on childcare alone, and UC doesn't cover it all, nor does it cover all my rent. Am barely keeping my head above water as it is, I can't cope with some a massive loss in expected income.

@TheBrilloPad - I have my fingers crossed that work can process the payment for you! There should be things in place within UC for when this happens
