Tight for bringing my lunch and coffee to work?

Just wondering how other people feed themselves at work?

I eat breakfast at home but have a stash of porridge pots to take with an apple, if I’m running late. I also make my own coffee and take it in a flask cup.

I take either leftovers or make a salad/sandwich at home, to take in for lunch. Always nice food. The girl that sits next to me said this is tight! She spends just under £10 a day on breakfast lunch and coffee, as she buys breakfast and coffee at Costa then gets a chain sandwich at lunch - I think this is nuts.

What do other people do? Am I tight?

Always take mine!! Once a week I'll buy lunch at work (school) but only duty days where I need something I can eat one handed outside!

CodenameVillanelle · 14/08/2019 23:23

Tight?
Tight???
Why would it be tight to bring your OWN lunch and coffee from home? If you offered to buy everyone in the office lunch and you brought leftovers that might be tight but how can anyone say you're tight for feeding yourself as you choose to?

Aquamarine1029 · 14/08/2019 23:24

The girl next to you is probably in debt. Ignore.

BackforGood · 14/08/2019 23:26

Of course you aren't tight.
In my world, you are normal and the other girl is bonkers.
That is so extravagant Shock - imagine what you could buy with the best part of £200 per month.

kateandme · 14/08/2019 23:28

i dont want to judge her.she has the means and choice to do so then great for her.but for me it would be absurd.and actually i love leftovers and making my own.if i had the money i might nip out for something on tight for time days.or one off but deff not most days.
but i think calling you tight was just wrong.and in my head id be responding unkindly.

Jsmith99 · 14/08/2019 23:28

I always take lunch to work and never buy coffee, unless I can claim it on expenses. I go to work to earn money, not to spend it.

lboogy · 14/08/2019 23:28

Not tight, you're sensible. I personally don't make any food for work because I like the idea of a surprise for lunch and breakfast. Sometimes I don't want to eat what I've prepared. It's a weird quirk though I am very much a saver on all other areas of my life.

Jayaywhynot · 14/08/2019 23:29

I take breakfast, lunch and snacks to work. Heat soup up in the microwave and take my own jar of coffee, paying for food that I already have at home is crazy, complete waste if money that is better spent on me!

Whoseagooddoggiethen · 14/08/2019 23:33

I relish making beautiful salads for lunches! Its my ‘down time’ each evening as A) I cannot justify the price of shop bought and B) homemade is so nicer! If im not having salad i might have leftovers or bring a lunchbag with chopped things to make a nice sandwich. Premade sambos are awful. I save money, save on home waste and always have something tasty with me.

Standingonceremony · 14/08/2019 23:33

Rude of her but point out how many hours she worked to pay for lunch. If you're on £10 an hour, she works almost a day a week to pay for week's lunch. She could bring her own lunch and go part time. That'll shut her up.

Whoseagooddoggiethen · 14/08/2019 23:35

I also bring own coffee as i have a machine at home so never a bad coffee plus environmentally friendly with my reusable cup. You are definitely not unreasonable!!!

Aquamarine1029 · 14/08/2019 23:36

@Whoseagooddoggiethen

I love making salads, too! So much fun.

DontCallMeDarling · 14/08/2019 23:39

Not tight and also better for the environment! Your colleague would save nearly £200 a month if she followed your example!!!!

timshelthechoice · 14/08/2019 23:41

Tight? She's a divvy. 'Bit sensible' would have been my response, 'I choose to invest £200 a month rather than spunk it on something that's going to eventually be flushed down the loo.'

CherryPavlova · 14/08/2019 23:42

When I go to the office, I usually take lunch. We have a cheap restaurant with salads, sandwiches and a hot choice but it’s easier and nicer to take my own and avoid the queue. We get tea and coffee provided so I don’t take that.
Buying things when put usually means.a soggy sandwich or stodgy baguettes/wraps etc. Much more environmentally sound, cheaper and nicer to bring something.

BrokenWing · 14/08/2019 23:47

Work canteen, sorry they like to be called a restaurant 🙄, Porridge 40p (+ banana from home), soup 35p. Drink nice icevcold filtered water from the machine. Cheaper and less hassle than doing from home.

Also have a stash of fruit, nuts, cereal bars, chocolate for emergency snacks.

RoseMartha · 14/08/2019 23:53

I always take packed lunch, my budget is tight so no option really.

Grandmi · 14/08/2019 23:56

I buy bread from our village Baker most days and I am always surprised at how many people call in and get sandwiches/ baguettes,a pastry and a coffee..that is about £10 !! Would definitely make my own if working every day !!

Chocolate35 · 14/08/2019 23:57

I have always taken lunch into any job. I have IBS and so I’m very particular about what I eat. And I save £50 a week.
Unless money isn’t an issue for you (in which case you probably wouldn’t be working) I think it’s stupid to buy lunch every day.

EleanorReally · 14/08/2019 23:58

She is stupid, you are not tight.
You are being sensible.

cstaff · 15/08/2019 00:03

I've done both on different occasion depending on the circumstances. Whatever suits you is best for you. Definitely no need to be so judgemental.

AlunWynsKnee · 15/08/2019 00:04

When I earned lots of money and we had a sandwich man come to the office plus free tea and coffee, I didn't bother. It cost me £1.50 a day.
I don't earn loads now and there is no sandwich man so I take my own coffee and lunch. It's not tight, it's prudent.

Comefromaway · 15/08/2019 00:05

I sometimes buy breakfast or lunch from the sandwich shop next door but it costs between £1.80 - £2.30 depending what I have.

£10 per day is silly.

Topseyt · 15/08/2019 00:08

You are sensible, not tight.

She is extravagant. Not to mention rather dippy.

Hotterthanahotthing · 15/08/2019 00:13

Not not tight at all.Who needs mass produced stuff when you can have fresh homemade.
I work in a hospital and everyone from the consultants down bring in lunch.
