Silly spending

Why cant I make £100 last a week? Paid my Bills of £57 bought a dress from charity shop for £7. All other bills paid and plenty of food plus have other money just in case. Just seems every week I'm spending £100 and nothing to show for it. The £57 bill was a one off so next week I shouldn't have to spend anything at all but it just seems I'm leaking money.

Keep a note on your phone of every single penny you spend.
After a week look at the note and you will find the leak.

JoJoSM2 · 25/07/2019 21:35

You need to keep track of your expenses. And then draw up a budget to tweak your spending.

VioletCharlotte · 25/07/2019 21:35

You sound like me OP, I haemorrhage cash, always have done Confused I have got a bit better over the years, but still down to my last tenner the day before pay day every month.

Write down everything you spend, it's a bit of an eye opener. With me its coffee out, top up food shops, random bits and pieces of make up, or stuff like knickers and socks from Primark. It seems like nothing at the time, but it all adds up!

HJWT · 25/07/2019 21:38

I put my money in the drawer take £35 out with me and try not to spend that!! Friday tomorrow and managed it so far but will probably get a takeaway tomorrow night 🤣

NotSoThinLizzy · 26/07/2019 08:08

Think I may have figured it. Bought a sandwich while out then treats for the 2 kids a sweet and juice. so that's at least £6 down the drain. Do it almost every time I'm out. Packed treats from now on I think

AllTheCakes · 26/07/2019 08:47

Would you consider getting a prepaid bank card? I use Monzo which keeps track of everything I spend and I can only spend what I preload on it. It really helps knowing my budget and what is left in the account as it is only for my “fun” spends.

BarbaraofSeville · 26/07/2019 08:54

Excellent, that sounds like a plan. Even 'cheap' meal deals are far more expensive than taking a packed lunch and if you're doing it regularly, it really adds up.

People can be spending thousands of pounds a year on daily 'it's only a few quid' spends on lunch/snacks/coffees etc.

And unless you have loads of spare money, most people would be far better off using that money for something else, whether it be 'bigger' treats like holidays or by simply being able to have some savings so they don't have to worry if the car breaks down or the washing machine breaks.

NotSoThinLizzy · 26/07/2019 09:13

Its crazy. This money is my to use as I need money but I would rather be saving it as there is no need to be spending £100 a week that adds up to £5000 a year 😯 would much rather save it for a house deposit

OP posts:
QforCucumber · 26/07/2019 09:36

Can you reduce your speands to £90 a week? i find if i have the money there i will spend it. So reduce what you withdraw and you might find you only spend the £90 rather than the £100, save the £10 each week. And gradually reduce it. My free spends are currently £70 a week but this does include putting £20ish into the car as fuel.

NotSoThinLizzy · 26/07/2019 09:39

I only use contactless as a way of trying to deter me from spending as I dont have it on me then 😂

OP posts:
LoubyLou1234 · 26/07/2019 09:41

Draw cash out and only take the money out you need for that outing or wherever your going.

QforCucumber · 26/07/2019 10:49

Oh god contactless is awful - it's like you don't see it as real money and lose track of where things are spent. Having the physical cash is a lot more manageable in that sense - you see what you have and I challenge myself to have some left in my purse by Friday (the day I withdraw) if there's any left I just top up to £70 rather than take out £70 again

BarbaraofSeville · 26/07/2019 10:59

I think you have to find what works for you. Some people like contactless because if they have the right account, it tells you what you have spent, so if your app is telling you you're spending £70 pm in Starbucks or whatever, it's there right in front of you, rather than just a load of cash withdrawals with no further information.

Others think that tapping around here there and everywhere is too easy and causes overspending.

Others don't like cash because once it's in your purse, or you break a note, it just runs through your fingers like water.

But for the OP, I'd look at what that £100 pw is going on and see what changes can be made to reduce this if it's unaffordable, or you'd rather use the money for something more worthwhile, like a house deposit.

It might be as simple as keeping pop, crisps and sandwich materials or diluting juice and refillable bottles at home, taking a packed lunch when you go out, because these things cost much much less like this than they do when bought out, even at cheaper places like Greggs or supermarket meal deals, and lets not even think about the cost at service stations, nice cafes, theme parks or places like Pret Shock.

Rainbowknickers · 26/07/2019 11:21

Oh god this is me
I used to buy a meal deal 3/4 times a week at work
That’s fine-the other snacky bits ain’t
I was spending at least £10 per lunch
There is a charity shop 3 doors down from work so was spunking money on my contactless card there too
Every Thursday I buy my treat of magazines-whsmith is over the road to work-so another £7 on a book on top of the magazines

Best thing to do is take cash out for the week

And take a packed lunch

PopWentTheWeasel · 26/07/2019 11:28

OP, I could have written your post. DH and I have just opened "daily spending" accounts, so money for our bills goes into a joint account then we get £250 a month each into a seperate account each which is the only account we carry cards for. It covers lunches, haircut, fuel and frivalous spending, for want of a better description.

I also have a spending tracker app on my phone to log spends so I can see where money is going. Shop-bought lunches are a biggie for me so I'm doing them at home now, and taking kids snacks out with us where I can to save money.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 26/07/2019 11:30

All cards track what you spend! It's how they know what to take from your account Grin

The only difference I can see is the hard stop at the end of your preloaded limit (assuming all transactions are authorised in real-time, not delayed), but you can also achieve that if you have basic bank account with no overdraft.

NotSoThinLizzy · 26/07/2019 12:26

Yeah seems it goes mostly on snacks while out and juice for me and two kids.

OP posts:
Wildorchidz · 26/07/2019 12:29

Get reusable water bottles and bring those. Far better health wise, environment wise and money wise !

Isthebigwomanhere · 26/07/2019 12:55

Little rucksack for everyone with juice bottles and snacks.
Don't use bank card
Cash only
It's easy to spend when you don't see the money changing hands

ListeningQuietly · 26/07/2019 17:22

No more snacking at all while out.
Take a bottle of water for each of you and then eat when you get home or before you leave the house.
"treats" are for when you have done something exceptional that warrants it.

Goforitgirl · 26/07/2019 17:33

I really struggle with this too.

I’ve been off this week and have overspent so much. Luckily we can afford it but I still hate knowing I’ve done it. The amount of lunches (mostly from the supermarket, not out), ice creams etc I’ve bought is sickening.

We’ve set a budget of £180 per week for fuel, food plus everything else and we really struggle on that every week.

NotSoThinLizzy · 26/07/2019 17:50

Had to buy a cheap crappy pair of shoes while today mine literally fell apart bus home wasnt for ages. Dosent help they had none in my size either so I've very sore feet today 😂

Charity shop time

Ginger153 · 26/07/2019 19:32

@BuzzShitbagBobbly I get where you're coming from but I'm another Monzo fan. The difference between it and my other banking apps is the live pinging of notifications of spending. It's like using cash mentality with a card! Brilliant and easy to understand tracking of the types of expenditures.

I transfer money weekly and when it's gone it's gone. The live balance updates are really helpful. It's transformed my spending.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 26/07/2019 20:44

the live pinging of notifications of spending.

I'm honestly not trying to be argumentative for the sake of it Grin but again that's nothing especially unique or special?

I get the same alerts on my Amex, which I agree is useful. I think it's possible on my main bank account as well, I just tend to put all my spending on this for the rewards.

(The latest one came though before I'd even put the phone back in my pocket!)
