What is the wage for working in retail at weekends?

I’m looking for a cash in hand weekend job to save some money for a holiday
I’ve got an interview today in local shop
What can I expect the wage to be?

It's likely to be minimum wage, so £8.21 an hour if you're 25 or over.

Retailers will still need to put your earnings through the books, and tax paid on it if you're above the threshold.

DollyTots · 21/07/2019 10:40

Minimum wage. Don't know anywhere that does a premium rate for weekend work anymore. I've just left a big retailer that was just minimum wage. No premium rates for Sundays or bank holidays. You are obliged to work Christmas Eve and Boxing Day (still no premium rate) and 1st day of summer sale. It's all just minimum wage. That's just what the bottom end of the ladder is 🤷‍♀️

Todaythiscouldbe · 21/07/2019 10:46

Minimum wage, unlikely to be cash in hand as it will need to go through the books. You will also be paying tax if you're over the threshold.

pikapikachu · 21/07/2019 13:40

My so works retail and weekends are the same rate as weekdays.

titchy · 21/07/2019 13:53

If it's cash in hand it'll almost certainly be less than NMW, with crap terms and conditions.

RebootYourEngine · 21/07/2019 14:39

Is it a chain company or local independent company?

A lot of places pay just minimum wage and everything will need to be put through the books and also most places pay either 4 weekly or monthly.

Paramicha · 21/07/2019 14:41

Usually min wage, no different to weekdays . However you are lucky if you get just weekends, so take it if offered. Everywhere my dc tried as students needed you to work during the week too.

azulmariposa · 21/07/2019 14:48

If it's cash in hand then it will be below minimum wage.

Paramicha · 21/07/2019 14:49

cash in hand does not mean not going through the books, at all. Also, employing someone under min wage is illegal.

titchy · 21/07/2019 15:18

cash in hand does not mean not going through the books, at all.

Hmm That's exactly what cash in hand means. It's an expression.

Paramicha · 21/07/2019 16:24

Well I receive and pay cash in hand and everything goes through the books. I know others in my industry do too.
Cash in your hand is not illegal, not declaring it is.

titchy · 21/07/2019 16:35

Cash in your hand is not illegal, not declaring it is.

No of course not, but the expression 'cash in hand' means not declared. OP wants a cash in hand job - presumably because she's claiming benefits rather than not having a bank account.

Lazypuppy · 21/07/2019 16:44

Minimum wage but you'll need to declare it as income and pay tax if necessary. And NI

babysharkah · 21/07/2019 17:01

Paying cash is entirely different to 'cash in hand'. Cash in hand avoids tax, NI, triggering benefits recourse.

BarbaraofSeville · 22/07/2019 07:13

No-one on here can say what the wage will be if it's an independent shop, but it should be NMW for your age as a minimum and you should receive a wage slip.

If you earn above £12.5k from your other job, you will pay 20% tax on everything that you earn from a second job, plus some NI possibly?

Some chains do pay more than NMW or you could look at working in a restaurant as you should then get NMW plus tips and there should be a demand for weekend work.

UnicornMadeOfPinkGlitter · 22/07/2019 07:17

Waitrose pay basic rate. Only shifts you get premium for are between the hours of 12 and 6 am.

megletthesecond · 22/07/2019 07:21

It'll probably be minimum wage. You're unlikely to get extra for Sunday's and bank holidays, that tends to be time off in lieu.

Namechangeforthiscancershit · 22/07/2019 07:25

You get paid cash (fine) not cash in hand (very illegal)

Well I receive and pay cash in hand and everything goes through the books

damppatchnot · 22/07/2019 19:54

Shop owner said it’s £5 cash in hand and hour
Fri 5-10 sat sun 3-10😳

Namechangeforthiscancershit · 22/07/2019 20:15

Confusedwhat? How old are you? Why would you want to work for so little (leaving the tax side for a second)

BeachComber1 · 22/07/2019 20:18

Shop owner said it’s £5 cash in hand and hour

Aside from working there, this should make you rethink ever shopping there!

Todaythiscouldbe · 23/07/2019 08:25

Well you're not going to get a decent rate of pay for cash in hand are you?

freshsheets · 23/07/2019 09:09

Why do you want a cash in hand job? £5ph is illegal if you're over 18 for a start.

Are you claiming benefits and want extra money for this holiday? I'm assuming you're not going to declare the money if so (as cash in hand!) therefore you're committing benefit fraud and give so many others a bad name.

katseyes7 · 23/07/2019 09:13

l work weekends at Tesco. l get extra for Sundays, but not for Saturdays.
