Buying currency online

Has anyone done this?
I've sold a load of things on eBay and made myself £250 which I would like to exchange into small denomination dollars (for tips etc). Ideally, I'd like to do this online, using Paypal to pay. Has anyone done this and can you please recommend some websites?

I've done it for years, however this year regretted it. As was given majority large notes and all I was told is 'its the denominations no one wants'. No where would exchange them. I was told in future if I wanted smaller notes to go to somewhere local where I can say what I want

Spidey that's really helpful advice. Thanks!

No problem @WelshMoth.

Come to think of it, all the years I have gone online, the denominations have always been quite high.

Luckily this year I got in just before the new 100 euro notes came in, but the majority I was given were 50's which aren't the worst, but still, handing over a 50 note to buy an ice cream will be interesting.

Bear in mind there is a minimum order value online of in the region of £700. Anything below is likely to have a high delivery charge which defeats getting a better rate online as its eaten away by the postage.

My reason for going online is to get a better rate as they do appear to be a little better. As much as the high notes were annoying, the difference in buying the same amount on the high street now is over £40, which to me is alot.

I would get a credit card for use overseas with minimal charges (see www.moneysavingexpert.com for info). Use that to draw cash in the US from a machine and then transfer the cash to the card company via mobile banking as soon as it appears on your statement. You'll get a much better rate and be sure that what you receive is current.

I am assuming you have a trip planned soon? We always order money online to pick up at the airport - you get a much better rate than just pitching up on the day. Then you can ask at the counter for a mix of notes to suit you.
