Rental income, WTC and deductibles

Our basement is a separate flat which we rent out. It brings in £500pm.
We inherited a retail unit which we also rent out, gives us £350pm.
DH gets WTC, about £200pm.
He has just added up all the receipts etc which we can offset from mainyenance on the flat, £270.

Our total income is less than the threshold so we don't actually pay tax, though we each fill in a form every year.

I had a job which brought in around 200pm (hours were variable). We told DWP, of course, and dh's WTC were cut by 200pm as a result. My job has gone (the office was moved a few hundred miles away, we were all dumped!).

DH is concerned that if he includes these deductibles then DWP will lower his WTC.

Any idea whether his money will go down? No one at DWP seem to understand quite how it works, and we certainly don't.

Oh! Meant to say that the people who rented the shop skedaddled owing us 1500 in rent and electricity, but that probably doesn't have much effect except to make us a bit more desperate!

It's based on rental profits for the year (less the £300 they allow).
I.e. income from rent, minus expenses, minus the £300 equals your rental earnings for tax credits.

The more expenses you deduct, the lower your income, the higher the benefits.

Other earnings need to be declared of course - I assume your husband is working even if you are not as I have known them withdraw "working" tax credits where the only income is from investments. Clue's in the name Wink

Can you get a new job?

Harvey, trying but there's very little work around here, and I have ms which limits what I am physically able to do. No one wants a 63 yr old disabled woman! I have been trying.

strawberries, yes he does but he does have to spend quite a lot of time keeping an eye on me. He worries about me being left alone as I'm always falling sbout, cutting myself, burning myself, forgetting to eat, all sorts.
