Overpayment Tax credits

Just received this years assessment and we have been overpaid last year by £870 approx. This means we get no further payments this year as this will be taken off our overpayment (happy with this).
However we still owe £700 approx and the letter states this will be collected from future awards by reducing payments under section 29(4) of tax credits act 2002. Does this just mean that they will just reduce the amount at each assessment until it’s repaid or will they come asking for it to be repaid in a lump sum?

This happened to us. They just deducted an amount off the payments made to us. It was a few years ago now (luckily don't need to claim TCs anymore) and I'm sure there are limits as to how much they can take. I'll see if I can find a link.

You need to call them and ask what they plan to do. Repayments are taken back in more than one way.

We were overpaid by about £2k. They have asked for it as a lump sum.

I was overpaid £750 apparently they are reducing my payments for the next 2 years!!
I offered to pay in a lump sum.. They said they cant do that
Its a mad system... You hear so many people being overpaid and having to pay it back

They have to allow you 2 years to repay and longer if you are happy to give full financial expenditure. I repaid over about 7 years @£10 a month. Google your rights regarding overpayments. A lot more than the helpline admits... Ask for the overpayment section when you get through. Not the main line.
