Tenancy agreement and UC after separation

Just wondering if anyone can help, partner and I have split up and he will be moving out of our privately rented flat. We're both on the tenancy agreement so I need to speak to the agent about transferring it into my name but I'm worried they won't agree to take him off as my wages are so low.

I need to claim UC as we have a daughter and I won't be able to afford it on my wages. Does anyone have any advice on UC? Does it take a long time to get payment?
Thanks in advance x

It takes 5 weeks to get a payment, you can request an advance (loan) against your first payment after a week. Its relatively easy to fill in online if you have all your paperwork.

But - if your partner is still on the tenancy UC will probably only cover a max of half your rent, so you need to get him off ASAP. Do you have a family member who would act as your guarantor?

I was you 9 months ago.
My landlord refused to remove my ex unless i got a guarantor. I didnt have one so have kept ex on it. Uc pay most of my rent, they had no issue with who was on the agreement . You'll be fine don't you worry

UC didn't care that my ex was still on the tenancy either. I explained that I hadn't taken him off when we split up as I was worried the LL wouldn't accept me on my own and they were fine with it!

If your ex is still on the tenancy they may only pay half the rent element, known as an untidy tenancy, it may or may not be a problem. Best to get him taken off if you can. Uc is made up of any elements you are entitled to , so a personal element for you, a child element, childcare element if oyu pay childcare and a rent element. Those are all added together then reduced by wages.

Thanks for the advice, I do have a family member who'll hopefully be able to be a guarantor. So that might work I suppose. Just my daughter is already unsettled with it all I don't want us to lose our home.

I'm going to look through the form just to get an idea of what they'll need from me. It's such a difficult situation.x

UC is done online, there is no form to fill out. You will need to go for an initial Id interview at the job centre if you cannot verify online. You will need tenancy agreement if private renting and your daughters birth cert, passport or other ID for yourself. It will tell you on the application what you need to take.

You are fully liable for the rent and therefore UC should pay it all (up to the LHA anyway). If they don't, please be aware that you can challenge the decision they made not to pay it all.
