I know these things are all relative, but do you think £25,000 unsecured debt is a lot?

We’re both on average salaries, 1 adult dc still living at home, don’t do much in terms of fancy nights out or holidays, but we’ve managed to get ourselves into this amount of debt. Part of it ( £8000 ) was for a car but the rest I just don’t know, it’s just topping up our income I think.
Does it seem scarily high?
We are able to make all the monthly payments so we’re not in trouble or anything, I just though at this age I’d be financially better off. ( I’m early 50’s )
Any advice on budgets ( & sticking to them! ) greatly appreciated.

8 on car
17k spent on what ?
Yes that is a lot of debt

Are you both paying into pension ?
Do you have savings ?

5 to 6 years to save properly for retirement?

You are really not taking your debt serious. And it's a huge amount, considering its just topping up your everyday costs

Nope, no savings & no pension. ( apart from a small company pension which will be about £80 per month )

Thank you all for your replies.
Yes, we have been drifting along for far too long like this, it’s ridiculous.
The only good thing about this is we have quite a bit of equity in our home, so if the worst came to the worst we could downsize, but I really don’t want to do that.

Well, at least you know there's a problem that needs addressing, and also you do have a substantial asset you can live off if necessary. I appreciate that you don't want to move but you could, so that's something.

does your adult dc at home pay a decent amount of rent per month.

The most worrying thing for me is that you have no savings or pension, and £17k debt with nothing to show for it. Even the £8k car debt is effectively lost since the car will depreciate too.

Can you not make ends meet without borrowing? If not, that’s a much bigger problem than paying the debt.
