Life insurance recommendations

I really need to get round to getting life insurance, can anyone recommend a good provider as I am struggling with who to choose.

Also I'm quite clueless when it comes to life insurance so if anyone has any tips or advice I'd be grateful.

The best way to get all your answers is to read MSE. They'll talk you through how to get a good deal. By the way, if your medical history is not entirely straightforward, you may find some providers might not be able to accept you, but don't give up, because they all have different underwriting rules.

Use a broker to do the legwork for you and explain it all. I'm happy to chat with you if you want to PM me.

Ah, so this is one of those threads where the OP asks the question then never comes back. Hmm

Apologies for not getting back to reply sooner, I have a child with a disability who has had a very bad week.

Thank you @DadDadDad that is very helpful. I was slightly daunted as there are many companies and my knowledge of insurance is very basic and I want to make sure I make the right choice as it's long term. Thankfully my medical history is straightforward and I'm a non smoker so I hope it shouldn't be too hard.

@Sunseed thank you, I will also look into a broker.

No problem, sorry for sounding snarky in my last post - too often, posters don't come back on questions like this, so I was venting my frustration.

Hope you get somewhere with your insurance quest. First big decision: critical illness which pays out if you get a serious illness (or die) or term assurance (pays out only on death).

Also, I hope you have a better week with your child.

That's ok, I also hate it when posters don't come back.

I have had a read whilst I've had some rare respite and I think I now have a rough idea for a starting point but I am sure someone will spot a flaw somewhere that I've missedGrin-

I am thinking of a level term policy written in trust for 20 years as my children will be 30-33years by then and it goes directly to them. We have no family help and I am a single parent so I want to make sure they have a good start if needed.
I'm thinking of £140,000 each as based on current flat prices, wages and inflation this should be enough to either pay in full for a basic ex council flat/shared ownership or pay for the majority of a flat whilst still comfortably being able to afford the mortgage top up if in minimum wage job. I don't want to give all the money for a property as I would still like them to appreciate money and work towards owning their own property themselves.
I'm just thinking about the critical illness cover now as I will only be in my early 50's in 20 years, on the one hand it's good to be prepared but on the other I'm on a low income and realistically past 50 is when I'm likely to need it more. Once the policy is up I would be taking another level term policy out for a smaller amount of insurance around £20,000 each and adding critical illness cover which would cover me until pension age.
