Two Cars and Insurance

Lightsabre · 05/06/2019 14:43

We have two cars both for some unknown reason registered in my dh name. I have my own insurance, he has his and we are named as the additional drivers on each other's policies. In order to save money, can I just be registered as the additional driver on his insurance and cancel my own policy altogether?

Each car should be insured. You may save money by having a multi car insurance policy.

GreasedPiglet · 08/06/2019 13:44

It's not you and him that have insurance though, it's the cars that are insured. And you have to be honest regarding who is the main driver etc.

No. You can't.

Plus you’ll lose all your own no claims discount and will be paying out a fortune when you want to have your own policy again in future.

pumpkinpie01 · 08/06/2019 13:52

No, when you drive under the driving other cars extension the car has to be insured. Also the car that is insured in your name should also be registered in your name.

GreasedPiglet · 08/06/2019 14:26

I don't think there's a requirement that cars need to be insured for the same main driver as the car is registered to.

Todaythiscouldbe · 08/06/2019 18:14

The car needs to be insured by the main driver with the other person as the additional driver. You also need to ensure you state if the policyholder isn't the owner/registered keeper, although that in itself is not a problem.
You could also get a multi car policy, some require more cars than drivers so shop around.

My husband and I were each insured as the main driver on the others car after he was involved in an accident driving my car. We’d swapped cars when we had dd1, he had my little runabout for work and I had the big car. It wasn’t his fault but it went to court and rumbled on for ages and when it came to renew the insurance, because he was still involved in a claim they wouldn’t let us change the policies back to our own cars. It got sorted eventually, the other driver was done for dangerous driving and the case ended. Made no difference to our insurance who the care we’re registered to. It does tell you on the V5 that the registered keeper is not necessarily the legal owner so they don’t care either.

  • cars were 🙄
Todaythiscouldbe · 11/06/2019 11:33

It makes no difference who the owner/registered keeper is but you still have to answer the question.

BrilliantYou · 11/06/2019 14:58

You need to insure the main driver but that doesn't have to be the owner.

Both of our cars were purchased by my husband and are in his name. I am insured as the main driver on mine and dh as a named driver and the owner if that makes sense

MintyT · 11/06/2019 15:13

You cannot use DoC ( drive if other cars ) if the car is owned by or leased to your partner or husband.
Also a raced car has to be insured.
You should have one car as you as re regular driver and your husband as the named driver. And the other car the other way round.
I work in insurance fraud . Also when using DoC the car is only insured for third party damage

Lightsabre · 11/06/2019 16:50

Thanks for the responses. Dh is the registered owner of both cars and has his own insurance on which I am the named additional driver. I also have insurance to drive both cars in my own name - all fully comp hence I was thinking , do I need my insurance when I'm not the registered keeper?
I think the simplest thing to do is to transfer ownership of the main car into my name so we are registered as one car each and have one insurance policy each with the other as additional driver.

Just get one joint insurance policy for both cars. In our case, DH is registered keeper for both our cars, although I mainly use car A and he uses car B. So he is the main user (including commute) of car B and I'm a named driver of car B, and vice versa. I have a no claims on car A, and his no claims is set on car B. I think we're with LV this year. Was Aviva previously but the premium shot up so I switched.

justanswerthephone · 11/06/2019 17:18

The register keeper is irrelevant

Both cars must have their own insurance.

Your OP suggested you wanted to insure just one car and use the 'Drive other cars' to cover the other car. That's not ok.

Todaythiscouldbe · 11/06/2019 19:45

You can't insure a car twice. Are you saying you have two policies, one for each car, your DH has one policy for one car and you're also the named driver on his policy? That's not legal, I think you need to speak to your insurers.
The owner of the car is irrelevant, it's the main driver insurers need to know

justanswerthephone · 11/06/2019 19:52

No. Each car is insured. OP is covered as a named driver on her DH policy under 'drive other cars' OP was thinking she could cancel the other cars insurance. She can't.

justanswerthephone · 11/06/2019 19:54

Didn't explain that well.

Car A - OP is policy holder and her DH is named driver

Car B - OPDH is policyholder and OP is named driver

Because car B policy covers both OP and her DH to drove car B under 'drive other cars', OP was thinking about getting rid of the policy on car A

justanswerthephone · 11/06/2019 19:55

*cover to drive car A under 'doc'
