You are not making a "claim" you will be making a complaint about mis-selling and why you think PPI was mis-sold to you. I know you say you have no records but search again as any documentation can be helpful, especially statements showing PPI was paid.
Write a list of all providers whom you may or think you may have had credit with. These can be cards, loans, overdraft, catalogue accounts etc. Armed with this list write to each company individually and ask about whether you ever had any ppi on any account with them, some providers have forms on their website for you to fill out.

The companies will then investigate your complaint and see if they have any records showing accounts and whether PPI was paid on these accounts. They will then write back to you with their findings and what they propose to do if anything. This is why your documentation is important as if neither they nor you have any documentation then the complaint will fail there.

Whatever you do, do not use a claims company, you do all their work for them by providing the information and all they do is put a stamp on an envelope, use the information you have provided and send it off, that's it.

Use the Moneysavingexpert resolver tool along with the accompanying guidance. It's completely free and walks you through the process.

But get on with it, the deadline is the end of August this year.

I did ours with no account numbers. There’s a ppi enquiry form on most major lenders websites and I filled it in best I could. Dh always refused ppi so I put this down as the reason for complaining.

Most sent a letter a few weeks later saying it was being investigated then he got the letters saying how much he was owed.

I'll second using the Resolver tool on MSE. I got £7k back!
