I’ve just gone on UC and my first payment was 22nd May for one month
When should my last tax credit payment have been ?

You shouldn't get any after claiming UC.
The day I claimed UC is the day I phoned other benefits to notify them.

damppatchnot · 30/05/2019 18:24

But I thought you get tax credits up to the date your universal credit is paid from ? Otherwise there is a shortfall surely ?

From what I have read, your tax credits stop as soon as you claim UC. Hopefully someone will come along to verify

missminagrindlay · 30/05/2019 18:31

There is a shortfall for most UC claimants of 5 weeks.

Babyroobs · 30/05/2019 19:11

Uc is paid in arrears. Any tax credits claimed after the day you made your UC claim will be classed as an overpayment.

Babyroobs · 30/05/2019 19:11

It's not a shortfall in payments, UC is paid in arrears. You can apply for an advance during the 5 week wait to tide you over.

damppatchnot · 30/05/2019 19:30

So your paid weekly for tax credit then you have to borrow the shortfall and pay back ?
How can that be right
If your entitled to something you should get it weekly

UC is paid monthly in arrears. If you are struggling then you can ask for payments twice a month which works out at about every 15 days. It's not a shortfall, it's just paid in arrears.

Babyroobs · 30/05/2019 19:43

Some people had tax credits paid monthly so it's no different for them.

missminagrindlay · 30/05/2019 22:00

But isn't the advance a loan? Stupid system, to pay in arrears to the poorest of people. Who thought of that crap? Haven't heard of anyone having anything but bother and misery on UC.

MondeoFan · 30/05/2019 22:42

I wouldn't have switched unless you were made to. I'm hoping it's scrapped before I'm made to switch over. Some people I know have started saving money from their TC so when they switch to UC and their TC stops they have money to tide them over for the 5 weeks they are left without any money whatsoever.

SpideyMom · 30/05/2019 23:32

I don't want to be moved over either. As much as tax credits have been a ball ache, UC sounds like an even bigger one. I am also used to being paid weekly, so monthly will be a new thing for me also
