Can anyone help me work out my payslip? I don't understand it!

So I should get bang on £750 a month. HMRC owe me £215 for taking wrong tax (I'm exempt from tax because I earn under £12500). This month my payslip says tax -£64.69 (including NI), total deductions £60.97 but I got paid £810.97?! I checked my HMRC account and I've been put on the right tax code, they said I'd get my rebate this month but that'd be total wages of £965. Can anyone understand what's happened here, why it says I've been taxed so much but have ended up with more money? I'd be so grateful for any advice!!!

It’s a new financial year. Has your tax code changed since your last pay?

ExCwmbranDweller · 15/05/2019 08:52

Double check that your deductions aren't actually additions this month, is the a symbol in front of the £60.97 sum? You are maybe getting your rebate in split amounts?

-64.69 is your tax refund. I assume this is your second pay this tax year? (Since 6th April). If so, write a letter to HMRC requesting they check if you have overpaid tax in 2017/18 due to an incorrect tax code. If you have, they'll send you a cheque.

Without seeing the slip it's difficult to tell. Can you talk to HR?

I can add pictures if that helps?

Second pay this tax year but last month is when I changed my tax code (after being paid) as I was put on the wrong one.

The tax deducted would normally be presented as a positive number, but you've been credited with tax to account for the previous overpayment. You've paid £3.72 in NI so £750 + 64.69 - 3.72 = £810.97.

If you've underpaid tax, they take it off in monthly chunks for a few months, so it looks like that's how they repay overpaid tax, rather than giving it back to you in one lump.

@BarbaraofSevillle thank you for your help- does that mean I'll get more back next month until it's all back?

I'd guess so. Bit annoying if you were expecting to get it back in one lump for it to come back in dribs and drabs.

HMRC often ask if you want tax adjustments to be made via the PAYE system or by bank transfer. It could be that either you or your employer has asked for it to be done via PAYE, or this is the default option.

If you ask your payroll people for an explantion, they should know what's going on.

If it's for the last tax year (so for pay before 6th April this year) you'll need to contact HMRC. Easiest way is a quick letter asking them to check for an overpayment as you believe you may have been on the wrong tax code. Include your name, address and national insurance number. Whenever I've done it, it's never taken very long.

Tax codes are usually cumulative, so that can have the effect of reductions coming back to you over a few months.
