Exam marking - advice?

Essentially I'm looking at trying to make a bit of extra money whilst I'm on maternity leave and if it goes well to then just have a bit of extra money. I've thought about exam marking for a while now and today I've looked into it but I don't think I understand what's required of me.
For example on the ocr website it says I'd have to travel to a centre when I assumed exams papers where scanned to you and you marked them at home.
I also don't know if I'm supposed to have degrees in these subjects or if just having GCSEs as my highest relevant qualification is okay?
Has anybody done exam marking before and can tell me a little more about what it's like, the best exam boards to go for, the best stage to go for (eg sats or GCSEs, I don't think it's fair for me to mark exams at a level I never experienced), if it's worth it, and if it's something i could do with a small baby?
Thanks 🙂

Are you a teacher?

PotteringAlong · 19/04/2019 09:08

I mark aqa gcse papers. They ask that you have taught the course within the last 2 years. You can’t just pick a subject and mark it.

Teachers do it because it’s the best cpd you can get but it’s a lot of work in a very intense 2 week window for comparatively not a lot of money.

Also, you might be cutting it a bit fine, my contract to mark this summer was done in January and the (unpaid but compulsory) training has already started.

I'm not a teacher, is that a requirement? I was always under the impression anyone can do it as someone once spoke about uni students marking exams to get by in the summer

You need
-three years recent teaching experience in the subject you are examining.

  • degree and PGCE
  • Windows 7 at home
  • if recently retired you can apply if you’ve several years examining experience.
zombee · 19/04/2019 09:10

Well that's put a stop to it if I need teaching experience 🙁

Yes, you need to be a teacher!

Ah well back to the drawing board of making money whilst on maternity! Thanks everyone

Uni students tend to mark the tick box questions as it’s cheaper for the boards

I've marked for AQA, Edexcel and Eduqas, absolutely everyone I've met both examining and moderating have been serving or ex teachers.

I’m sure you need to be a qualified teacher and you mark your subject. You need to know the curriculum and mark schemes.

Quartz2208 · 19/04/2019 09:15

My Dad has gone gcse and a level marking in his subject for over 30 years and yes you need teaching experience for both in that area. He is retired but because he has never stopped marking it’s fine.

He has stopped a level now because it was a lot of hard work he still does gcse because it’s easier but it still takes him a good 3 weeks of solid work plus a lot of moderation meetings

I mark KS2 Sats papers. You need a teaching degree to do this. The pay isn't as good as it used to be. Maybe £800 for a very intense 2 weeks work.

gauntletthrown · 19/04/2019 13:36

I'm not a teacher not have I ever been. I have 2:2 degree in a social science pointless subject.

I have been marking general studies A Levels for about 15years!

It's boring and laborious tbh - it's also sometimes v amusing as the answers they put are hilarious at times. Also- depressing how poor some of the literacy is and the low level knowledge you have to give credit for.

The Applied Conditions for GCSE were published by OfQual in 2016 - so possible to be a subject expert marker without teaching experience if appointed before then. That has changed and boards must use appropriately skilled and experienced examiners ie teachers.
