DP's wages!

blackcoffeeinbed · 23/03/2019 20:48

DP works for a small family run business. He should be paid every Saturday into his bank. He's told that his boss' wife does this by bank transfer. Sometimes he gets paid by 12pm, sometimes it can be much later in the day/evening. On occasions there have been times he hasn't been paid until the Monday, with no warning, the explanation is normally that something was wrong with their online banking. DP is currently in hospital awaiting an operation, he hasn't been in since Wednesday. He's been checking his bank all day, and no wages. So messaged a colleague who told him that they were paid in cash today!! No call or message from his boss to tell him anything about this. He has tried to call and message his boss with no answer or reply. They are closed tomorrow if not I would of gone down there and asked for his money myself. It's likely that DP will not be out of hospital for a few days yet depending on when he actually has his op. He's complained to his boss about how irregular his pay is and is just told, his wife does it when she can and sometimes there are problems with their online banking! Is it not reasonable to expect to be paid at the same time every week? If there's a problem with the online banking then this should be explained ASAP to employees and the wife should get to the bank and not mess people around with their money? As I say it's a small family run business, there is no union or anything like that. So can anybody advise me on how he can deal with this officially please? Tia

I don't know officially how to deal with this but in the future I'd suggest your DP looks for another job with more reliable employers. All I can suggest is that you ring his employer first thing Monday morning.

He is currently looking, there's not much suitable in the area atm which pays what he gets now. Its very frustrating, he will call Monday for sure if he doesn't get a response. Thank you for your reply.

Find a new job. My bills come in at a regular interval. I'm not going to work for someone who can't pay me in the same way.

blackcoffeeinbed · 23/03/2019 21:03

He is looking as I say in the previous comment. I think though for the time he still has to work there to bring in a wage, and for everyone else that works for them now or in the future, this needs sorting out. They can't keep getting away with it. There must be something that can be done to bring them in line over it?

If this is the only issue he has and he is quite happy with all other aspects of the job and employer and if they are just being a bit tardy and disorganised over paying his wages efficiently rather than deliberately trying to diddle him, then I'd say it's more of a minor irritation and not worth creating a big fuss over, especially if other equally well paid jobs are hard to come by in your area as you suggest.

jinglewithbellson · 24/03/2019 09:47

Not a minor irritation if your relying on the money on time like most will be.

Tell your dh to tell them he doesn't turn up a few days late here and there so he shouldn't be paid like that

ivykaty44 · 24/03/2019 17:10

Your dh is free to join a union and it would be illegal to prevent him

I would email the company this link from ACAS
m.acas.org.uk/index.aspx?articleid=5309

Which stipulates

DP's wages!
ivykaty44 · 24/03/2019 17:11

Ask if they could contact ACAS themselves to get assistance with their legal obligations toward their employees as ACAS will work with both parties for resolution

MaybeitsMaybelline · 24/03/2019 18:07

This isn’t ok, especially not when you likely have DDs due on Monday and food to buy!

I think I would be very angry with the boss and suggest you are paid by Bank transfer every two weeks on say a Friday or better a Monday so you don’t have to be 8n limbo all weekend.

I dont believe the banking problems I suggest incompetence or the bosses wife not treating payroll with any importance.

blackcoffeeinbed · 24/03/2019 20:31

ivykaty44 thank you so much, the link is very useful information and I have forwarded it to DP so he can be fully informed when contacting his boss tomorrow. Perhaps the mention of ACAS will prove he's not tolerating it anymore. I am a member of a union via my work so I will look into wether he may be able to join them aswell.

It's definitely not a minor irritation, we highly rely on his wages for multiple reasons!

I suspect the “problem with online banking” is that there is not enough money in the bank account to make the payments....
