Alternative modes of income?

What can I do to generate income?

I need to cobble together £600/month to meet my basic rent, bills and food needs.

I am open to any and all suggestions, I just feel so desperate.

I have some money saved (£10k) and I invested £5k in something which was generating me £50 a month for about a year but that tanked and I doubt I will see the money again. The 10k is supposed to go towards a deposit but in this market I'm not sure about buying and if I can do something to create an income for myself then maybe that would be a better use of the money.

I am reluctant to just quit and 'live off' my savings because it's taken me so long to save the money.

Background

I'm in a really tough situation at work. I made a career move which has ended up being a huge mistake. Admin to Audit, in case it matters. The work is fine, but I'm not coping socially.

I am miserable, my boss is interfering, unpleasant, micro-managing to the point that I have anxiety for the first time since I left uni a decade ago. It's almost abusive, he will shout at me then ignore me for days. My confidence is crushed and I struggle to get out of bed in the morning, I am just not the person I used to be. This has been dragging on for almost a year now and I am at breaking point.

I have been on annual leave for the past 10 days, just at home to get some down time, and I managed to have an interview for a job I really wanted. I didn't get it and on Monday I have to go back to work and I'm starting to feel anxious again. In my time off I started feeling more like myself again, it's depressing how much of an impact it's having on me.

DP is trying to be supportive but I don't think we would cope on his salary alone, so he's resorted to making me endless cups of tea.

Can't help with the income (obviously job change is the 'easiest') but how about trying really hard to cut costs. £20 a day = £600 a month. Actually writing that down, that's quite a lot, but are there places you can cut back on? Gym membership, tv packages, daily take away coffee?

BrokeAndTired · 22/03/2019 12:30

LizzieMacQueen

It's not really about cutting costs, the £600 is literally just the basics I need to live/contribute financially to this household. This was me doing the maths to see what I need as a minimum income.

I spend more per month once you account for lunch, travel, clothes etc.

Okay, how about barwork, babysitting or tutoring; evening dog walking (if you're at work daily otherwise I'd recommend small pet boarding).

Car boot sales/ebay but beware if you make this a business as there may be tax consequences.

How are your cooking skills? You could sell on home cooked meals to neighbours or older folk in the community.

Call some temp agencies today anf see if they have any ongoing assignments coming up.

Babysharkdododont · 22/03/2019 14:26

Can't you resign, use some of your savings to tide you over for a few months until you find a new job?

TheABC · 22/03/2019 14:34

Can HR help as it's workplace bullying?

In the meantime, I am freelancing online and earning at least that a month. If you have a transferable skill (e.g. admin or numbers), there is demand out there for you. I also second asking temp agencies or even looking for shift work. You only need 18 hours a week at minimum wage in order to earn that amount.

moosesormeece · 22/03/2019 14:36

It's really, really hard to present yourself well in an interview when you're feeling so ground down by your current job.

As Raver suggested is it worth maybe putting out some feelers to see what temping opportunities are available where you are? If there's work around it might well make sense to hand in your notice then temp until the right job comes up. If you end up covering a couple of weeks from savings it's really not the end of the world and probably worth it just to get yourself sorted out.

The alternative might be that you keep pushing yourself through this awful job and making yourself unwell, and a long time on sick pay could ultimately work out more of a drain on your savings.

I am on a couple of mailing lists that provide advice about working at home and freelance opportunities e.g. workathomewife. Here are some sample links, hope they come through. I live in the USA so I hope it's not irrelevant in uk!
