DD DP moving in rent issue

Have posted this in chat but no reply so posting in money instead .

DD18 DP moving in to spare room from miles away as wants to be near DD plus wants to move to new experience ( we live in a vibrant city) DD going to be staying at home an extra year at college / working on year off.

The DP is nice and we get along. Wants to pay rent, is looking for job which will be low paid and is in a specialist area , already done apprenticeship. Won't be moving till found job locally.

So it's really advise about what to charge .locally rooms go for £400 incl bills but as DP to DD we don't want to overcharge . In view of them saving a bit for later . Me and DH don't have a massive income . We both work almost FT and on low income jobs . We were going to rent the room out anyway for extra income.

The DP will be eating with us or they will cook alone , they might even cook odd meal for us Hmmso not sure rent should include food but if not how will I work that out ?

What have other people done in this situation ?

I'd charge him full rent - if you want to save some money for your dd, then you can do it out of that. For food, I'd say £30 a week which will include all cleaning products, loo roll, milk, tea bags, cereal, bread etc, any meals they choose to have with the family. If they want very specific food, they buy themselves.

Make sure you do a contract so it is all official - if your dd and their dp split up, you don't want to have subsidised them all that time when you needed the money from a lodger, and you'll need to be able to get them out if required.

I’d charge less than market rent (to whatever subsidy you can afford) because he’s her boyfriend.

No less - if you want to help them save, then cream off what you can afford from the rent and set it aside to give to your daughter as a rental / purchase deposit.

Have a contract - lodger status only so he can be asked to leave on v short notice.

I would consider discounting him even more if he’s saving your daughter money - e.g. if they split travel to see each other now.

Thanks yes I hadn't thought about a contract but a simple one is s good idea. Also saving out of rent for DD is a great idea .
