Hi everyone,

Im currently a student mum on income support while coming to the end of my course. By summer I will have a part time permenant job and have been told I will move to universal credit?
Not sure if this is true as i wont be getting any benefits from job centre when I start work , the only thing changing will be I apply for working tax credits and obviously will get my full time wage. But does this mean universal credit? I assumed it was only people who didn’t have a job and claiming benefits from job centre such as jca or IS that would get universal credit?

Any idea

Thanks xx

If you're in a U C area, any changes to tax credits triggers a move to universal credit.

dementedpixie · 20/02/2019 21:53

Universal credits replaces several existing benefits which I think includes tax credits

Do you currently receive childtax credits?

Happylifeofmum · 20/02/2019 21:56

Yes I currently get child tax credits

THen yes despite what the job centre may incorrectly tell you you can claim wtc . Had you not currently been in receipt of any tax credits you would have had to claim UC.

MyDcAreMarvel · 20/02/2019 22:01

If you're in a U C area, any changes to tax credits triggers a move to universal credit.
That’s incorrect , very few changes to tax credits will trigger a UC. Only those changes which previously would have caused you to claim a legacy benefit.

MyDcAreMarvel · 20/02/2019 22:02

will trigger a change* to UC

Happylifeofmum · 20/02/2019 22:04

So I won’t need to claim UC?
No it wasn’t the job centre it was just other people I have previously spoken to said thats what id have to do. Just thought id ask if anyone here knew before i contacted JC because i very rarely need to these days as nearly finished my course.
Thanks

Found this info online:

Claimants who already have an award ofChild Tax Credits(CTCs) can apply forWorking Tax Credits (WTCs). The award ofWTCis a change of circumstances to the existing Tax Credits award, so they do not need to claimUC.

MyDcAreMarvel · 20/02/2019 22:17

Sorry I thought the JC had given you wrong info. No you definitely don’t need to claim UC.

Happylifeofmum · 20/02/2019 22:23

Thanks for the help, im glad!

You can claim working tax credits but depending on your wage you may not get them. The cut off is about 17k.
