Credit check has shown a CCJ but I can’t get any more information

Forgive this emotional pregnant lady, I’ve spent most of the day in very confused tears and seem to be going round in circles. We’ve applied for a new rented house and submitted our application forms yesterday. Mine has come up declined. The estate agent said she’s not allowed to say what the CCJ relates to but told me the amount and that it dates from 2016. It’s about £900 and it rang a bell straight away as in December I had a water bill from a property I’ve not lived in for 6 years, saying the outstanding amount which is the same as the apparent CCJ. I paid in full on the day I received the letter, as I had no idea I even owed this money. Nowhere does it mention any court action.

I’ve lived in a house inbetween that one and where I am now and at neither address have I been contacted. My phone number has also remained the same. I’ve called the water company and they say they can’t see any reference to a ccj but gave me the number of a court that they use. They have no record of me, but gave me the number of another court who also have no. They told me to get a full credit report from Experian as the details would be in there. I’ve done that and it’s showing nothing. I emailed the estate agent to tell them this, and they’ve come back to say try equifax as that’s who their referencing people use and it’s more conprehensive. I’ve done that, and again there’s no ccj recorded on the report. So what do I do??

The estate agent have said I need to get a certificate of satisfaction and if I can get that before we move I can just declare the ccj, be referenced again and will pass. Our other alternative is to pay 6 months rent upfront which we’re fortunate to be in a position to do but it feels so unfair when I can’t find any record of this supposed court judgement. What do I do??

I think you need to go back to the estate agent and get the details. Of course the are allowed to give you your own personal information, she’s talking rubbish.

Tell them you’ve done your own credit checks and no CCJs came up on either, so you need to see what they are looking at. Not them telling you details, you need to literally see what they are looking at. Check they have credit checked the correct person. If this CCJ does exist, you’ll need the reference details on there to trace it, otherwise you’d have to write to each court in the country individually which is ridiculous. Tell them you won’t be able to get a certificate of satisfaction without the details, so they need to bloody well tell you the details!

When a CCJ is satisfied it shows as satisfied on your credit report (assuming all the ppw went through correctly from the court) and drops off 6yrs after satisfaction.

It would be unusual for a major credit event like a CCJ to not show on both Experian and Equifax in my experience.

The estate agent has been looking at the wrong file, presumably. You don’t need a certificate of satisfaction, as according to the two main credit agencies, there is no ccj.

Thanks so much for the advice. I managed to get the estate agent to give me the ccj number and the court, which was the first one I called yesterday. The debt IS from the water company as expected, but I still don’t understand how nothing has shown up on a credit report for me. I’m also a bit cross that they’ve clearly written to my old address and my old landlord hadn’t forwarded on the letter to me, it must have looked official and we live in a tiny town and I see him quite often, he knows where I live! The woman I spoke to at the court this morning was absolutely fantastic, she talked me through everything and I’ve emailed them with all my evidence that it’s been paid, as well as phoning the litigation department of the water company who say they’ll make sure the court know I’ve paid the full amount in the next three days. So fingers crossed I may get the certificate in time. I was an absolute mess yesterday trying to deal with this and I’m so glad it seems that it’s going to be straightforward to resolve. Very much stress I don’t need at the moment though. I’m going to try and put it to the back of my mind and crack on with the eleventy billion other things that need doing before we move. Thanks again x
