car insurance for learner driver

oh wonderful people of Mumsnet, please may you tell me the best place to get a short term insurance policy for DS while he is still a learner?

DH and I both drive automatics so we are buying him a small cheap car now to learn in (once the driving instructor gives us the go ahead) but we don't want to lock in to an annual policy with him as a learner as the provider might not be the best for once he has a full licence.
So we need insurance that we can do monthly, or even weekly don't we?
TIA

I used www.collingwood.co.uk/learner-driver-insurance/short-term-learners/Collingwood for DS1 - Bought 6 weeks from him passing his theory. DS2 I put him on my insurance.

I used Marmalade for both mine. I paid monthly, I think it was about £80 per month.

Thank you
I shall look into both of those.

Marmalade for me too. Had 2 children on this and then a car through them when DS passed.

We used Marmalade for both mine too, was about £90 a month a few years ago but you can just keep renewing it on-line until they pass their tests.

It's great as you can stop and start it as and when you want and it isn't associated with your own policy.

We've used Admiral, and also Marmalade. Just be careful, they can't have the learner insurance on top of yours if they are the owner of the car (was certainly so for Admiral) so we had to have the car as ours until he passed.

Admiral learner insurance was a fair bit cheaper than Marmalade for us.

We're currently using Sky insurance, fully comp for dd 17 less than £300 for the year

ingenie
I just cannot fault them
they put a tracker in the car
and you get weekly feedback
we are on our third year with them and will stay with them till the kids turn 25 (their upper limit)

their tracker was even able to identify the exact time the car was broken into a while back

both DH and I can use the car, as can both the kids
excellent system
