DBS check for yr 11 16yo for part time work

DS was 16 in Sep and did a pool life guarding course in Oct half term then applied to the sports centre attached to his school and got a job.
He needs to have DBS check but there is a problem with him supplying them with ID.

They have had his passport which is fine but need a bank statement or similar with his address.
He had an account which he got annual statement on but didn't save, and now has a Santander account with online statements which aren't good enough.

He seems to be going to be going round in circles with then, and meanwhile isn't getting paid.

Any suggestions?

It's so frustrating. The DBS system was overhauled a few years ago to stop people having to have multiple checks. As sashh says you can now register online for the update service which any new prospective employer can look at.
Unfortunately it doesn't work.
When DS was 16 he worked as a lifeguard and got a DBS check.
Then he worked as a tutor for Kumon maths but they insisted on a new DBS. At university he worked as a volunteer in a school but they insisted on a new DBS.
He then started teacher training and yes, he needed a new DBS.
His collection of DBS certificates has now grown to 5 I think. All this in spite of paying a fee for the update service.

DS and DD both had Santander accounts and you can go online and switch to paper statements. DBS is not the only thing that demands proof of address and they have come in useful.

Dox so they are taking the money for updating the DBS yearly (or however many years) but still insist on a new one? How can they do that? Totally negates the need for the yearly fee.

You pay the government for the update service. It's the employers who insist on a new one.
I agree it's pointless, DS is now a teacher and if he moves schools even within the academy chain they ask for a new DBS. Sigh. I imagine some safeguarding person insists upon it because it's not a legal requirement.

I did say to him about switching to paper statements, he said he couldn't - but this was late last night and we didn't go into it, I think he could do this if he goes on the website not the app, but even that leaves him waiting another month for a paper statement.

I'll see if he has managed to speak to HR when he gets home then try and move things forward.

When your son received his National Insurance Number the letter which was sent to him will have his name and address on it. That should be enough proof of address I would think.

He unfortunately can't find the letter. I have a scan copy, but also not that it isn't dated so couldn't be shown to be within the last 3 months anyway.

As Dox said the individual pays for the update service, it's currently £12 a year, Now I think (not 100% sure) the reason they ask for a new one is because of data protection. Getting a new DBS means they own a copy of the DBS certificate.

There are also rules about who can access what on the update service, so as a teacher, my DBS check includes adult and child barred lists. If I go to work for an employer that only has services for adults then even though I can give permission for the employer to check my DBS is the employer doesn't have the right to check the children's barred list.

Also if I want to work in a different 'workforce' they may have to do a new DBS.

It is slightly better than it used to be, at one point i had two part time teaching jobs, I applied for a DBS for each job the same week, one came back in two weeks, the other took 6 months. The actual check of all lists has to be doe for each application so if one person receive both applications in my name they cannot check eg the adult barred list and put that information on both, they have to physically do a second check.

Oh and in the 6 months I was able to work because the rules then (may have changed) were that yo had to have applied for a CRB as i was then.

Dd had this problem. Statements or bills that are printed off online are not accepted by the DBS.

Your ds should be able to get a letter signed from his Headteacher. This is listed as acceptable for 16-19 year olds in full time education in the UK. Otherwise if he goes into a branch of his bank with ID they will print off a copy statement for him.

My dd couldn't use the school letter as she was working for her school so the ID could not come from them

Ah - I've just seen the sports Centre is run by the school. He might have the same problem as dd did then.

Ah that's interesting ComeAwayFrom.
I've left it with him for the moment and will push him later in the week if it still hasn't moved forward.
He has got some account opening letters from Santander so they might work, otherwise we will go into town on Wednesday and ask the bank to print something.
