Self employed DH had a really bad year 2017-2018 and spent a lot of it recovery from spinal surgery.

Our income reduced significantly and we’ve only just been able to afford to pay his accountant to do his the tax return. We received it back today.

The deadline for tax credits submissions was 31st January... We are 6 days late. They are likely to owe us a fair amount as our estimation was higher than earnings.

They have said they’ll send it for review. I’m terrified any back payments will get turned down as we were late! Help!

Do you mean income tax self assessment? Totally different and separate from tax credits. Tax returns were due on 31st Jan. Submitting it late won’t penalise you with regard to Tax is due back to your husband, but you might get a £100 penalty for late return.

The tax return was done on time but the final earnings for that tax year were given to the tax credits office 6 days late. The final earnings were due in on the 31st January in order to update our claim for that tax year.

I’m really worried, will they still pay any arrears even though we missed the deadline? They said they’ve sent it to a specialist team...
