Need some advice please . Following my daughter's death last year I have become depressed and suffer from anxiety. I have now been off work for 9 months and my salary has stopped . My employer applied for me to be paid under their Group Income Protection policy but I have been declined. My employer is supporting my appeal but I am so scared that I won't qualify.y GP and Therapist have both written reports to confirm that I am not currently able to function at the level required to carry out my role (ops manager) . OH also agrees . I do want to go back and am really trying to function but I am in a terrible state . So low at times that I am frightened for my safety. I talk to family and friends so am looked after . Does anyone have any advice please ?

I’m afraid I haven’t come across an IPS case before where a person was accepted in your circumstances. They do tend only to accept cases that involve a catastrophic diagnosis for the employee, such as stroke or end stage cancer. I’m so sorry for your loss, OP.

That's awful mimi. I just don't know what to do . I would have hoped in this day and age that Mental Health was recognised as a health condition 😢

I used to work for a Group Insurance company and it all depends on what the policy says. Some will have exclusions for things such as a condition you've had before or something they just don't cover. Different policies cover different things too in terms of work - some will cover solely your job so if you can't do your exact job, you're covered. But some only cover any job for which you're reasonably trained so if you were once a teacher but are now a bricklayer, and you lose a leg for example, you might not be able to lay bricks anymore but you might be able to teach. I'd ask your company for a copy of the policy wording - most companies don't like giving their employees specifics but at least you'll have a better understanding of what you're covered for.

I really feel for you and your situation and hopefully your appeal goes through but quite often it's not just the insurance company not wanting to pay, it's that the policy wording is such that you're not covered. Most employers support their employees in appeal regardless, because then they don't look bad and it's the insurance companies fault.

Thank you . I think what they are trying to say is that I am suffering from Bereavement and that is not covered . My GP has confirmed that it is in fact depression. Will just have to see - either way I am not up to going back yet x

Many will only pay out nowadays if someone is permanently unable to work in any capacity. I’m dealing with one at the moment which isn’t going through even though there is a serious injury because the person currently employed in a professional role could in theory do a basic manual job.
