Thinking about leasing a car. How much does yours cost per month and do you think it is a good deal? Thank you

DH does around 20,000 miles a year so no lease / pcp would be worth it for him
I do around 15,000 a year so few of the common deals would be worth it
so we own our cars
and support our amazing local independent garage

I've tried to look at leasing but can never find a car I like for a reasonable price. They feel really expensive.

I have a high spec fiesta that is nearly 9 years old and I have had it four years. I have spent about £1k on repairs and £800 on servicing. I have had to replace a couple of tyres due to potholes Angry but I presume if you knacker a tyre on a pothole on a lease car you'd have to replace that yourself anyway?

I lease. Have done for 3 years now. I'm a community based nurse so need something reliable. My old vw golf had to have a new turbo which cost £1.5k then loads of things were also clogging etc. I got sick of shelling out for it.

I had a VW T-Roc this time. £700 upfront, no arrangement fee. I pay £240 per month which includes all servicing, MOT, tires etc. For me it's stress free motoring.

Swingofthings you seem knowledgeable on this. Which lease companies would you recommend and how do you (roughly I understand) estimate what mileage you might do - especially if you haven't driven for a while?

I need reliability and no unexpected big bills which is why this appeals to me. I don't have anyone to help with car maintenance and cars these days anything beyond basics seems to require specialised equipment & knowledge!

I'm not someone that cares about the status or look of a car, long as it gets me from a-b and isn't one thieves are most likely to target even for joyrides that's fine by me! U don't even care if it's a weird colour!

Though must admit I don't like "tinny" cars that don't feel safe but then I'm thinking of older minis & ka's which felt too light & insubstantial to me.

"I lease. Have done for 3 years now. I'm a community based nurse so need something reliable" funnily enough it was my cpn first suggested this to me, says it's what she does & she must do a lot of miles and in the worst way in terms of wear & tear on the car (very short frequent journeys)

My OH bought a brand new car 3 years ago with a 60% discount - it was £20k list price which he bought for £14k.

That's not 60% discount?

I was going to change my car in the next couple of months but think I'll wait until I get a new job as a lot of the jobs I'm looking at do lease schemes and salary sacrifice. Then it'll be one monthly payment for everything but fuel. I'm paying loads on finance at the moment so I think I'll save quite a bit once insurance etc is factored in.

The ‘peace of mind’ with leasing isn’t always the case. I’m a rubbish driver and curb a lot and bump into things (despite every system going to prevent me from damaging the car). That’s probably why I would ever get a lease as I’d get really fleeced when returning it.

Generally speaking, leasing works out considerably more expensive than buying. But to buy, you need to be able to afford the car in the first place.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 07/02/2019 06:12

We have just gone for a leasing deal after always buying cars outright. Our last car, a 3 year old Ford Galaxy cost us £15000 and we hoped it would last at least 10 years but it barely lasted 8 years, having cost £2k in the last year in things breaking down as well as all the other normal costs.

We are fortunate enough to earn decent money and I am fed up with old shitty cars that aren't reliable. We are treating ourselves to a mini clubman which is my dream car. PCP deal and if it's reliable, will probably pay the balloon payment and keep it.

A few years ago I never would have done this but we want peace of mind and reliability as well as a bit of luxury.

I use the company LeaseCar UK and they have been absolutely brilliant. Great customer car, getting me good deals, car always delivered on time, handover very easy and as already said, never been charged upon returning the cars.

I estimate mileage on counting daily commuting to work and then adding a out 15%, however each time I have changed jobs in between going from 1 hour commuting to almost none and back to longer commuting so just amended the contract each time. I think you have to wait a year to amend, and you might be limited to how many times you do so, so best to increase after 12 months if expected to increase/wait until a year before return for the opposite.

Not if you shop well. It's been cheaper each time I got a new car. I normally go to the dealership first to try the car and they never do a deal as good, buying or leasing directly with them. It might depend on the type of cars though.

Ootscoot · 07/02/2019 08:42

There will always be people on here commenting how they buy a car that’s 15 years old and keep it another 15 but surely the OPs of these types of threads aren’t looking for a car that age or they wouldn’t even be considering leasing?
