Funeral costs for estranged parent

Bensonhead · 04/02/2019 13:28

Ok, bit of a long one.

I have been estranged from my Father for some 13 years, although one of my brothers still saw him from time to time. He passed away last week and it is time to arrange his funeral. As far as we are aware he had nothing that any sensible person would have - no life insurance or pre-paid funeral plan etc. He split with a long term partner with whom he apparently had a relatively stable existence early in 2018.

The basic quoted costs from the funeral director that has been appointed are coming in at circa £3k. My brother is offering to put it on a 0% credit card, but I can't conscionably allow that - he works for the NHS and him and his wife are looking to sell and buy a new house this year, at the same time taking on a bulk of this cost would put a dent in my and my husbands savings, especially as I have just started maternity leave (with a baby due in 10 days). I don't want him to have a paupers funeral, nor my brother to shoulder the burden, nor do I especially want to pay the costs. State assistance with funeral costs seem limited to those receiving benefits, which we are not but I wondered if there were any other routes or options.

Please no judgement on the relationship etc, this is obviously a bit of a difficult time.

I hope some of the links are useful.
My XH is very ill, and one of our DC is no contact. I would not expect her to put a penny towards his funeral.
The one who is in contact has no money.
I hope you can find a way through this Flowers

As for “he’s still your dad” utter bollocks, if my brother hadn’t sorted out a funeral I would have left it to the Council.

This^

People don't know the half of it. They don't know the history and politics of the relationship. You get what you give (or not ?) when it comes to relationships. ALL relationships.

Death/bereavement/funerals are good to bring out sentiment either good or bad.

Good luck with whatever OP decides.

You can apply for a grant from the government for help with funeral costs. Might be worth looking in to

So, thanks to those who mentioned it, we are now looking into either a 'direct unattended cremation' or an 'attended cremation' which look like they will cost about half of what we have been quoted. I can't think many people would want to come anyway and that feels like an appropriate compromise.

I haven't spoken to my father for 30 years. No way on earth would I contribute towards his funeral!

Unfortunately if you don’t want a paupers funeral then you have to pay for it.
I imagine you will be able to get something for less than 3k though. My Mum passed away and we didn’t really scrimp and it was just over that.

I’m pretty sure this is only awarded to households on low incomes of under 18k ish.

HRTpatch · 04/02/2019 18:48

Definitely a direct cremation. I am having one.
No need to spend £3k plus on a funeral.

MrsMoastyToasty · 04/02/2019 18:48

His bank should release funds from his bank accounts to cover the expense.

The OP stated there was no estate.

squeakyreptile · 04/02/2019 19:47

People saying 'He is still your father'.... how lucky they are to have no idea!

OP, I could be in the same position as yourself. If/when that happens, I would be very happy to leave everything up to the council.

There can be no judgement. If you feel that the cremation options are a good compromise, that is a good option.

[quote craner100]I would definitely shop around for a funeral plan, I would use Quote Me Less as a starting point .

It was in Feb 2019 so I’m hoping the op managed to get something sorted
