Childcare tax free scheme payments

Dows anyone know if only I would be able to make payments into the childcare tax free account?

My ex and I split childcare costs, at the moment he pays me his half and I pay the provider - I use childcare vouchers for my half but he didn’t bother.

As I’m changing employers soon I won’t be able to continue with vouchers, so will need to open one of the new tax free accounts where the govt top it up. Will my ex be able to pay directly into that, or will he have to pay me the money to me for me to then pay into the account? It would make quite a difference getting the extra 20% on his half.

He'll be able to pay into the account too. Once it's all set up, which was way more hassle than it should have been. You just set up a regular payment from your own bank accounts in to the tax free.childcare one

As the above poster says he will just pay into the same place you pay into as a regular payment.
Realistically you could just ask him to pay into your bank account account X amount- do you mean pocketing the 20% difference that your X over pays to you directly?

No, I don’t want to profit from the 20% extra by paying in less from his contribution, I want the extra from the govt. I envisage we’d pay equal amounts per month into the childcare account and therefore both benefit from the 20%.

Thanks - good to know he can pay direct, makes it much easier than having it go through my account!

It would work both ways, ie if he paid you directly you could still pay it into the account at the same time as yours. So it wouldn’t matter if he paid it directly into the account or if you paid it in you would still benefit from the govt topping it up.
You can get a max of £500 contribution from the govt per month...
